when to lift yellow onions

Please advise when do you lift yellow onions? maryf, drogheda, Co Louth Posted: 01/06/2010

If you mean August sown or autumn sets of Japanese onion, such as 'Senshyu', these are lifted in June or July, when the tops flop over and begin to turn yellow.

They can be used before this whent hey have made sufficent size to use, and while they are still green on top.

problems with onions

I have grown onion sets put them in March the tops have grown to about 12" but the onions have not grown at all and feel very soft to touch as if empty inside, what have i done wrong can you help please? bonstey, Oxted, Outside Ireland Posted: 18/05/2010

It is normal for onion set plants to grow up that tall or taller and later they bulb up, assuming they are in sunshine and the soil is reasonably good. If the soil is a bit low in nutrients, a liquid feed would be worthwhile.

bolting onions

Some of the onions planted have bolted . Can you suggest why this should happen. Do I remove them or let them grow on . Are they edible? rose49, , Co Dublin Posted: 17/05/2010

Sometimes onions bolt due to the trigger of cold weather in spring. They are generally not used as the stem gets tough and the bulb shrivels.

onion growth

is it possible to grow onions in a hot house successfully? moray, tullamore, Co Offaly Posted: 22/04/2010

Yes, but there is no reason to.

Growing onions

I'm planning to grow onions for the first time. I have grown other veg, and my approach is to protect the crop from the problems it suffered in previous years. While I see that onions can suffer a number of problems including white rot, onion fly, etc, I'm wondering which problems are common in Ireland or the south east. Grower11, Kilkenny, Co Kilkenny Posted: 26/02/2010

Onions are generally easy enough to grow in good fertile soil in a sunny spot. Onion white rot is the main problem and it tends to build up after a few years. It is usually introduced on onion sets, so be careful not to plant away diseased sets.

Growing from seeds keeps white rot at bay because it is not seed-transmitted. Neck rot of onions in store is mostly weather-related and worse after a wet summer. But if the onions are over-fed, they can be soft and more easily affected by the neck rot fungus.

Moss growth on driveway and seed onions

Can you advise regarding moss growth on tarmacadam driveway? Also what is the best time to plant seed onions? gpbuckley, Dromcollogher, Co Limerick Posted: 24/02/2010

Sow onion seeds in March ideally in fine soil, or sow 5 or 6 seeds in cell trays or small pots and plant out the group of seeldings later.

Use Mossgo or similar product for driveway moss.
