To prune a prunus?
 

To prune a prunus?

The attached photo is of my 20 year old Prunus serrulata 'Kiku-shidare-zakura' growing outside my kitchen window. I trim it every summer to keep it compact as my garden is small. I'm tempted to remove the side branch as that is now getting quite heavy. What is your advice. Mary Catherine, Blackrock, Co Cork Posted: 29/03/2017

Yes, take off the side branch in June. There is some risk of disease introduction by pruning, but the tree is currently very imbalanced.
