Earthworms in compost bin.

I have a plastic compost bin. When I open the lid loads of earthworms fall down. Where do they come from? Are they on way in or way out? Noirin, Palmerstown, Co Dublin Posted: 20/10/2017

These are compost worms, specialists at breaking down plant material, as in a wormery. They probably came in with some plant debris you gathered up, and then multiplied.

Sometimes, if the compost gets a bit too hot, they climb up but they are natural wanderers, seeking food.

Add some material for them to feed on, taking out rooted material too.
