Country Garden : Case Study No. 2

Assessment: | Hard landscaping: | Planting: | Garden style: | Maintenance and cost:

Low hedges to the front, wire fences all around, level ground, house faces east, not exposed.

Hard landscaping:

A driveway provides access and parking. A grove of trees fills one side. An island bed partially screens a wildflower area. The back garden has a paved area beside the house with a view onto a mixed border on one side. The other side looks across to an informal pool and associated bog garden with wildflower meadow and woodland area beyond.

The pool is over one metre deep at its deepest and it has sloping sides lined with synthetic rubber and fifteen centimetres of soil on top. It overflows to the boggy area. There is a small summerhouse.

Native deciduous and broadleaved evergreen trees and shrubs are planted around the boundaries to link the garden with the countryside and encourage wildlife. The trees, tall grass and bog garden provide safe access to the pool. A mown path through the wildflower area provides access to this area and the summerhouse.

Non-native, ornamental plants are confined to the island bed in front; the border surrounding the fine lawn area beside the paving, and the beds around the house itself. The wildflower area would have permanent bulbs in irregular drifts near the edge.

Garden style:

A very informal, natural style with ornamental touches close to the house only.

Maintenance and cost:

Little maintenance; some mowing. Not expensive; pool, paving the main cost. Native species are cheap and easily raised from seed.
