Help.... Can anyone tell me what is this called

29 June 2016 09:45:54

i find this a bit ugly now but did flower a beautiful coral petal

fran m fran m 29 June 2016 09:49:34

It's a seed pod from one of your Poppies. If you leave it alone you will have hundreds of seeds.

mrscrumbo mrscrumbo 29 June 2016 09:51:55

cool thanks, must read up on it

Jacinta D Jacinta D 29 June 2016 10:38:46

I love the look of Poppy seedpods.

mrscrumbo mrscrumbo 29 June 2016 10:45:01

It's a bit mad looking alright, does the flowers last long?? Will they flower again this year???

Dick Dick 29 June 2016 11:07:59

Yes , it is a poppy pod.Do you know what type of poppy seen you planted?

Jacinta D Jacinta D 29 June 2016 12:19:25

Flowers don't last long, and even less time if we have heavy rain. Should self-seed for next year and years to come. But slower to bulk up if it's an oriental poppy.

Help.....Funny tree but beautiful

17 May 2016 22:16:16

I planted this tree about 7 years ago, as far as I remember it's a prunus, it seems to b 2 trees combined into 1, is this normal??? could it be two seeds combined into one, or has any else a better explanation

PCON PCON 17 May 2016 22:38:49

Somebody has grafted it. Look for the graft mark below the start of pink. More frequently the white is below the pink. That one might even have a double graft.

mrscrumbo mrscrumbo 17 May 2016 22:43:30

Thx PCON, what exactly does that mean, my brain is greener than my fingers ??

PCON PCON 17 May 2016 22:56:57

Most flowering cherries are produced by grafting a branch from a pink cherry tree onto the root stock of a white one. In that case the tree will bear pink flower, except any branch which grows below the level of the graft, which will have white flowers. It is quite common to see such trees with white and pink flowers. The root stock is more vigorous, so eventually white will predominate. In your case a white branch has been grafted onto the pink stalk. It should be possible to see the join on the main stem.

mrscrumbo mrscrumbo 17 May 2016 23:01:31

cool, thx for that, very interesting indeed , I'll see if I can find the graft point tomorrow, there was me thinking I had a very rare tree that was going to make me rich & famous, agh well the dream of it all was nice,  thx again for info, I'm away to cry !!!

Jacinta D Jacinta D 18 May 2016 05:36:41

PCON has the answer.
