Noelfitz's Garden

Noelfitz's Garden

Hello.  I am interested in trees, shrubs and perennials mainly.  My garden is easy care, however his year, with so much rain, I have not gardened much, but the garden is not too bad.   Forunately as I am on acid soil I can grow camellias, azeleas and rhododendrons.

I try to encourage wildlife into the garden, but my bird feeders are being destroyed by gray squirrels. Please have a look at my "Profile".

Fritillaria meleagris

Fritillaria meleagris

I am still trying to get my garden sorted after being away.  Neighbours cut my front lawn, but as the back was locked the grass in the back garden  was left for me.  As the grass had not been cut for months there were seedlings of Paeonia ludlowii lutea in the grass, I potted up a number of these, and hope I did not destroy the back ‘lawn’.

I thought I would be away for the flowering of wood anemones, Fritillaria meleagris and trilliums, fortunately, things being late this year,  they are still in flower.

Clara Clara 07 May 2013 20:31:35

You are now going to have to make up for lost time and am sure all will be back to normalvery soon esp. with this lovely weather .

I love the colour of that Paeonia.

Jacinta Jacinta 07 May 2013 20:38:31

You'll certainly catch up with gardening jobs in time. Great photos, Noel.

It's good to be home

On Thursday evening I got home after being almost two months in Gdansk.  The garden needs a lot of work, but it was pleasant to be home

Pwiseman Pwiseman 06 May 2013 22:11:20

Great shots there Noel, i can imagine the excitement of seeing the garden after 2 months and the massive changes that have gone on. I'm sure you will fly through the work that is needed

Gracedieu Lass Gracedieu Lass 06 May 2013 22:23:35

Welcome back Noel. I am sure you will have lots to do over the next few months. Nice to come back to plants in flower in your garden.

Jacinta Jacinta 06 May 2013 22:26:33

Good to have you back, Noel. Great photos.

Rachel Rachel 06 May 2013 22:26:54

How interesting! I wonder do you have anything to report, horticulture-wise, from Poland? You'll get on top of your own garden in no time.

Moya Moya 06 May 2013 22:35:27

Welcome home and hope you get it into shape soon Noel. There are some lovely plants in bloom in your garden. What is the name of the blue Rhodo?

accsean accsean 06 May 2013 22:37:19

JoanG JoanG 06 May 2013 22:44:53

Welcome home Noel.  You came back to beautiful plants, judging by those photos, and you'll catch up quickly now that the weather here has improved.  Like Rachel, I'll be curious to hear if you have any gardening news from Gdansk!

andyf7 andyf7 06 May 2013 23:01:35

Noelfitz Noelfitz 07 May 2013 05:01:56

Thanks for all the comments.

The rhododendron is 'St Breward' (hhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/59423207@N03/5437726357/lightbox/).

In Poland when I arrived there was snow everywhere, however when the snow melted the plants popped up immediately, within days there were flowers in bnloom.

Moya Moya 07 May 2013 23:11:29

Just looked it up Noel and Duchy of Cornwall Nurseries are charging 3 times the cost of the plant to deliver to Ireland!!!

I would love to get a blue rhodo but am not prepared to invest that much.

Isn't i great how the flowers manage to put on a great show even when you weren't there to 'mind' them LOL

Home thoughts from abroad

Gdansk

Gdansk

I have been in Gdansk since mid-march and am going home this day week.

I am wondering what my garden will be like.  I am sure the grass will be like a meadow and the garden will be very untidy.

One of my first jobs will be to get a skip and get rid of all the remains of trees I cut down over the winter.

But I am looking forward to getting back to gardening and catching upon with all that has happened in garden.ie.

Mary Mary Mary Mary 25 April 2013 15:44:32

Noel, like you I love getting home to the garden, it's always a thrill to see what's happened. I'm sure you will see big changes since the middle of March.

JoanG JoanG 25 April 2013 16:13:33

Hope you're having a wonderful time in Gdansk, Noel, and yes it will be nice to get back to your garden and I'm sure it will look fine and you'll catch up soon.

Ladybird Ladybird 25 April 2013 16:44:58

It's always good to return home and have a walk around the garden, especially now as the weather is warming up.

andyf7 andyf7 25 April 2013 19:57:12

well the grass is not scortched with the summer so far, but you will sort it no doubt.

Myrtle Myrtle 25 April 2013 20:17:56

Plenty of time to catch up when you get home.

Noelfitz Noelfitz 26 April 2013 11:45:32

I am looking forward to getting home.

Thanks for all the comments.

Conrad Conrad 26 April 2013 14:13:36

More gardening

As the weather has at last improved, yesterday I continued weeding and tidying up my main south-facing herbaceous/mixed border.  I do not cut back in the winter, but leave the bed until spring.  When working in the border I found glasses I lost last year.

Today I had a good look at the garden and saw no new interesting features.  The thing I get the most kick out of now  is seeing new peony growth.

Pwiseman Pwiseman 19 February 2013 21:06:08

Nice find Noel and lovely shots especially the crocus

JoanG JoanG 19 February 2013 21:57:01

Love that last photo of your garden Noel, looking splendid in the spring sunshine.  It was a lovely day today; mostly I was busy elsewhere but just had time to give my little patch of grass its first cut.  Happy gardening.

fran m fran m 19 February 2013 22:06:10

Lovely photos Noel.

Moya Moya 19 February 2013 22:24:11

It's hard to improve on perfection Noel. Glad you got the opportunity to enjoy the lovely day.

Jackie Jackie 19 February 2013 22:39:11

Good day to garden

Good day to garden

Good day to garden

For the third day in a row I have been able to garden without rain.  I tidied up part of my main herbaceous garden.  It was good to see Crocus tommasinianus, Narcissus 'February Gold' and the peonies beginning to grow.

Clara Clara 16 February 2013 21:53:50

Great day Noel again and I did not get out as I had other plans but I got out on Thursday and Friday and it was so good even the old bones were aching ...love the photos .

Jacinta Jacinta 16 February 2013 21:57:07

February Gold is a super narcissus.

Terrific day here too on the Northside, Noel. One could almost think it was summer. Long may it last. :)

Periwinkle Periwinkle 16 February 2013 22:04:09

Love those little Tomie crocuses!

JoanG JoanG 16 February 2013 22:19:15

Yes, a good day but I too was elsewhere but did get out on Thursday and it felt good.  Love those little crocuses Noel, do you have them a long time and do they multiply?

Noelfitz Noelfitz 16 February 2013 22:34:38

JoanG,

I also love these crocuses.

When we came here in 1982 the house and garden were a mess.  But one day just after winter we discovered a huge amoount of snowdrops and C. tommasinianus in the back garden.  However as time went on and I gardened more the croci (crocuses??) started disappearing.  A few years ago I made an effort to get them to multiply and they seem to be doing that.

On Christmas Eve (2012)  I bought a lot of corms in Woodies (at a very reduced price) and planted them in  grass.  I hope they will do OK.

Keego Keego 16 February 2013 22:42:27

lovely pictures Noel nice day in Cavan but no sun:(

JoanG JoanG 16 February 2013 22:43:43

Thanks Noel, I'm thinking of getting some next autumn as they would make a nice edging along my new bed.

Jackie Jackie 17 February 2013 08:21:46

Ah they are lovely Noel. Sure sign Spring has sprung. It's to remain dry for next few days.
