Vallota

Vallota

this is the Vallota or Scarborough Lily I told you about on your journal,  What do you think?

Ternie Ternie 23 August 2009 22:26:11

Yes, reallt, looks similar! I was told mine is amaryllis, and I never checked. I used to think it is amaryllis. I love it anyway :)))

rita d rita d 24 August 2009 11:49:27

I love it too Olga, Hope its not too long before mine is as good as yours. Dont you think VALLOTA sounds a bit Russian??

Ternie Ternie 24 August 2009 18:41:40

Yours is good too. Mine started to bloom just 3 years ago (this is the 3d time). At first year there was 1 stem, second year - 2 stems and now I've got 3! No, for me Vallota sounds Italian :)))

Alan S Alan S 25 August 2009 22:26:16

i think amaryllis bulb is more exposed above the soil because it likes the sun. once your flower blooms rita it will be a lovely shade. leaves look lovely and healthy

Get well soon! Miss talking to you.

Hello Rita. This is my first time to read your journal. That Vallota Lily looks very like the enormous Lily I have but seems to more genteel. Mine has similar coloured buds but seven flowers come on the one stem one after another and the leaves are enormous although the snails put some manners on them. Like your other readers I pray that you will recover your full health soon. The name Vallota remnded me of Malta whose capital City is Valletta.

Joybells Joybells 30 October 2009 10:06:11

Wishing you well Rita, and looking forward to reading your journals very soon. Take care Joy x

Watsonia

Watsonia

 Hi Michael

Repotted my lovely Watsonias  you gave me the nudge towards.  Took this photo specially for you..  Do you think they will be ok in this size pot for a year or two.  Pilansii was potted earlier and has already made new growth.  look forward to lovely flowers next Spring.  Apricot Queen was really pot bound

Periwinkle Periwinkle 22 August 2009 21:13:40

Now you make me wonder if I should divide my Watsonia that was planted 3 years ago(in ground)? Im sure yours will do well in that pot. They are lovely flowers.

Jacinta Jacinta 23 August 2009 08:26:25

I have heard of Watsonia but not really sure what the flowers are like. Does it have a 'common name'? Please enlighten me. My memory is on a malfunction at this hour of the morning,.

rita d rita d 23 August 2009 08:55:19

Jacinta, Michael C has a photo of an apricot watsonia in one of his albums, his is doing fab as its in the ground, whereas my poor specimens have to make do with pots..

Rachel Rachel 23 August 2009 11:15:26

I was lucky enough to inherit a watsonia this year (at least that's what I thought it was). It had been abused but hasn't flowered yet since it's got the tlc. When it does flower I'll but it up for a positive id. Reading with interest as I know little about the plant.

Mairin Mairin 23 August 2009 21:31:36

I bought one only about 3 weeks ago. Mine has orange flowers - quite a dark orange colour. It's not planted yet though!

Pat Pat 24 August 2009 12:19:20

I have a Watsonia in the ground and it is beautiful. It is in I think the July or Aug photos but it has no name on it as I couldn't put a name on it without Barbara, she knows these names. I thik it might be your Apricot. They do spread.

How about this?

my prize

my prize

Sallysarah and I went on a day long plant hunt yesterday (Fri).  We started off in the HSE Rural Training Centre in castlebar.  I had never been there before but sally is a regular customer so brought me along.  I was so impressed in spite of the rain which was relentless.  We got four well established perennials for 10 Euro.  Will post names and varieties when I have them repotted.  The prize of the day was a large Strelizia given to me free gratis and for nothing by a member of staff looking for, as she said ' a good home' hope mine is good enough.  Had (have) one which bloomed for the first time earlier this year. Since it bloomed I followed guidelines and placed it outside for the summer....but its looking very sad and has not made any new growth since flowering..afraid for it..  Today I bought a special deep pot and repotted my prize.  Top dressed compost with aggregate and its now looking very smart...  even think it has a flower bud developing.. fingers crossed  (They take forever to open)  probably next spring if it is a flower..  may only be another leaf..

Next stop was Horkins Garden Centre where we raided the hospital trolley.  Then we met a staff member I have got to know through being a regular customer and she reduced the plants even further..  Will post names and varieties again when finished repotting.  All activity in that area finished with onset of rain in the early afternoon today

Myrtle Myrtle 23 August 2009 08:45:08

That looks beautiful even if it never flowers, but heres hoping it will.

Mairin Mairin 23 August 2009 21:29:10

Now, that is a fabulous plant. Can't wait to hear if it flowers.

Rachel Rachel 23 August 2009 23:53:54

It looks great. Want to try the Bird of Paradise - my seed never germinated unfortunately.

shelser shelser 29 August 2009 20:37:02

That is a fantastic gift/freebee and the perfect home for it Rita.  The pot is just perfect and the pale stones set it off brilliantly.  You and Sally Sarah are a great team!

diary

this lovely little diary was given to me by Olga when she came to stay in Westport at the start of her Irish holiday.  I will now be more organised and keep records of new plants and repotting of older ones.  Johnplotman,  you have been my inspiration for resolve to be organised  ( on paper anyway)  Who says resolutions are for New Year only.

jocko121 jocko121 22 August 2009 20:42:59

Rita, Thats all our wish to be more organised . I just did up a new bed and made a plan of what & where all the plants are and went, now if i can only find where I left it .... Oh to be organised

Ternie Ternie 23 August 2009 08:25:35

I hoped the diary helps :) you have so many plants already, long list :)
