Weed wand/ flame gun

30 December 2016 16:48:48

Hello all. Hope you had a peaceful Christmas and wishing you new opportunities for 2017. Getting garden ready, we'll in theory anyway. Looking for advice on weed wand / flame guns for weed Control. Products vary from company to company in price and what type of aerosol used. Have any of you got one and where did you purchase? Included two possible candidates..

Jacinta D Jacinta D 30 December 2016 16:56:17

Hi Evelyn. A very welcome back and I hope you had a lovely Christmas. I have never tried weed wands before but customers swear by their effectiveness. They're sold in Woodies, probably Homebase too.

Hey jacinta.  Woodies says no  product match. And homebase show aerosol cans for weed wand. I expect it's just a little early yet for stores to have products on site or on display. Thanks anyway..

I have one for years. Weeds seem to recover quite soon after burning them. Sometimes use it to kick start a reluctant barbecue . Propane or butane gas at local hardware.

Fleurette Fleurette 30 December 2016 18:44:06

We have one, but I really cannot tell you  where it is currently hidden. My husband used to make use of it to light the fire ..... no, not a bonfire, the one in the sitting room!

I found that our weeds have too much sap or are too wet ..... but I will add that in an "Open Garden" the owner just ran it every day along the edge of his manicured lawn. Haha, no use to me !

Thanks pcon and fleurette. I have gravel all around the house, tunnel and shed.  We also have a dog and definitely don't want to use chemicals. I'd use a flame gun for small annual weeds that come up in the gravel and the edges of driveway..

I feel that in your situation it could wor k quite well if you are very diligent and use it on the babies, baby weeds, I mean.

When we were kids, we used to be given the job of scuffling the gravel on a Saturday afternoon.

PCON PCON 30 December 2016 23:31:47

Maybe I'll take it out and try it again, instead of weed killer, on the cobble lock front driveway. Might need to use it more frequently. My recollection is that the weeds sprang up again quite quickly, and it is no use against moss or algae. It is not quite the same as either of those above, but closer the the second one.

Hi, I don't have one but from what I've heard they have a short term result. All they do is burn the surface growth away, roots are fine and healthy and we all know what happens healthy roots............

Happy New Year.

feverfew feverfew 31 December 2016 11:29:21

Hey guys, thanks again and you to francess. Happy year.  Cleavers,, chicken weed and hairy bittercress Ard main culprits. I used to use a kettle of boiling water but it's tedious in and out. Due to health issues and no chemicals things got out of control last simmer into autumn.  we had to dig out some with a trowel. Which brings up dome soil. Vicious circle.. Iv read up a bit on using a flame gun. And it's a no no using on soil as obviously it makes the soil sterile in time...

Maybe we can organize a more central location for next year. Although Johnstown seems to fit and suit us beautifully.
