Red Sentinel

18 January 2011 18:18:21

My Christmas tree this year was a beautiful miniature red sentinel crab apple. This is the first year I deviated from the traditional fir but I was very happy with my choice. It looked a treat decorated with baubles and stars & the natural red clusters of fruit seemed perfectly complimented. It is now defrocked and awaiting its new bed in the garden when the weather gets a little warmer. The transition from indoor to outdoor for the fir last year went well, there was no trauma to the tree or irregular shedding in its new bed. However I am concerned that the transition will not be as successful for my little crab apple as it has already started to blossom. I hope I haven't confused it with the heat inside, perhaps it thinks that Spring has arrived early this year.

I would recommend this tradition to all plant lovers. Instead of purchasing a 'real' tree that has been cut down or an artificial plastic tree, I like to buy small tree's that can be added to your garden in the warmer weather. You can then remember each Christmas by the tree you gathered round each year and best of all, it's still alive and growing in your garden.

Thanks Fran. I was delighted to find a site where we can find relevant info for our Irish climate.

Nice idea, but I could just imagine how LITTLE garden I would have left if I kept on planting my Christmas trees out. :)
