Well what about every silver lining having a cloud!  The silver was the great show the hot border put on for me this year while the cloud is descending now in the enormous amount of stuff to cut back. In the photo it is not one big bed as the whole centre area is the cut back from a quarter of the border !

I found a shrub buried behind a huge clump of Joe Pyeweed and remember planting it a few years ago but not seeing it since. looks very familiar but cannot think of the name. It is rather battered looking having not seen the light of day but the tips of the new growth has a purple tinge. There is new growth coming from the base so it will be moved.

Love to watch the progress of the Cortaderia as it throws up it's plumes  opening more every day, great.

Heavy rain today but glad to see it as the ground is bone dry.

Ulp it would never be a sage???? No didnt think so! Even with cutting back theres lots to admire! Love the third photo. Lovely mixture of form and colour. We had the rain as well and equally welcome for the new path and rhodos.

I too, just love the third photo.  The canna makes it!  And yet all the components are equally important.

No suggestions for the shrub.  Sorry.

The third phot is 'soo' your garden. The view always look fantastic with the cottage as a backdrop. Would the shrub a Philadelphus?

Elizabeth - I am so encouraged to know that I am not the only one who finds little strangers growing in the midst of borders! I'm sorry I can't help with an ID either but I would agree with your idea of moving it to somewhere you can keep an eye on it!

That's some mound of cutting back! I haven't been able to even think of starting that yet as I'm still "with the builders" and trying to do bits an pieces in between!
