Lack of garden programmes

11 December 2009 09:41:39

With BBC's Gardeners' World gone off the screens for the winter, the weekly garden fix is no longer available.  On the radio, Dermot O'Neill isn't on Mooney (RTE Radio 1 - Thursday only) and it is a long time since I heard "Ask about gardening" with Gerry Daly.  I used to hear him on Saturday evenings around 6.30pm as I was driving back from Kilkenny but it seems like years ago.

I found that using the BBC iPlayer, we have access to Gardeners' Question Time.  Wonderfully, previous broadcasts can be listened to.

Unfortunately, BBC's Gardeners' World cant be viewed using the BBC iPlayer as we are outside their area.  Pity.  I wonder if RTE could "buy" the Gardeners' World programmes and then we could either see them on TV or on the RTE Player.

Yes we should start a petition!

Rachel Rachel 11 December 2009 10:02:40

We are so deprived.

Clara Clara 11 December 2009 10:22:51

Yes I agree with you we need a fix in the winter

How right you all are!   We are in dire need of a weekly Irish 'Gardeners World'.   Surely there's someone in Ireland who has the garden 'know-how' and personality of say, Titchmarsh, Monty Don or Carol Klein - just waiting to be discovered.  There is so much interest in gardening, be it flower or vegetable, that were there a weekly programme, I'm sure the viewing figures would break all records.  In my opinion there are too many cookery progs, too many repeats, too much crap  - we desperately need a gardening programme.   Don't the prog planners see and read about how Ireland has 'gone gardening mad'  - it's staring them in the face!!  They need to go out there and get an Irish presenter, someone with 'get up and dig', someone with oomph who knows our climate!!  Yes, we should petition.  I would definitely write, if I knew where to!!

I asked Gerry Daly about the lack of gardening programmes on R T E, and it seems the director of RTEonly wants programmes that appeal to the majority!!!!!and up the ratings.

sallysarah sallysarah 11 December 2009 11:32:57

I take it that the director of RTE doesn't notice the mad exit from RTE viewing  to BBC on a Friday evening...........he wants programmes that appeal to the majority - he's obviously not doing his research!!!!!

RTE buy Gardeners world !!! ah Mairin no chance and anyway it might be better than anything RTE might do but I still think it's poor and it's criminal the amount of money it's pumping into that new garden when theres a recession on!! I have UKTVgardens on sky which does repeats so I can happlily look at Alan or Monty all I want :-) I also have a DVD of all my favorite bits over the past 3 years that I refer to regularly.

Drumanagh Drumanagh 11 December 2009 13:24:26

Bill what number channel is UKTV gardens? I thought it was gone since last summer?

sallysarah sallysarah 11 December 2009 13:38:49

I too thought Sky had stopped showing the UKTV gardens.  When I saw it had gone missing I phoned Sky who said it was no longer on their schedule.  How come, Head Gardener, you're still receiving it - please put me out of my misery, what number is it on?  I used to love looking at all the different garden shows.  I know RTE buys BBC G.World, but surely they should think about airing their own!!!!

We should send in a petition

spider spider 11 December 2009 16:12:05

here's a mad suggestion for you's. Why don-t you start your own gardening show on U-tube. maybe Craig could link the gardening site to U.tube and everyone can do a broadcast from their gardens and show other members what they are up to, that is if they wanted to

sallysarah sallysarah 11 December 2009 16:57:18

That is a mad suggestion Spider.  I couldn't possibly broadcast from my garden - not without a whole new gardening clothes wardrobe (or should that be shedload) - I cant recall seeing Carol Klein broadcasting in her pyjamas.....  Garden.ie ladies' would be sending in excuses not wanting to broadcast from their garden due to the fact they had nothing to wear, or that their hair needed doing.........   I know we're all stars in our own right but there's only so much multi-tasking in front of a camera a gal can do.   Get back to your drawing board Spider and don't even think of a female Garden.ie Calendar.............

Sally Sarah had'nt looked at in a while and yes looks like sky have discontinued it :-(
