Wormery back in use

31 January 2010 20:29:45

I went out this afternoon - around 3pm - with the sole purpose of emptying out 2 containers and one hanging basket, all of which had lavender growing in them last summer and all of which have died due to the bad weather.  One of these lavenders was Munstead and another was called Hidcote, both of which are English lavenders and are supposed to be the hardiest of all the English lavenders.  However, mine are definately dead.

When I went to empty the containers, the top inch was frozen solid.  I was surprised as it was the afternoon and both containers were located in the sun!

The contents of all three are now in the wormery with shredded paper on top of each tray and an empty plastic milk carton under the tap for the run-off.   I know it might take a while and in very small doses, but I do love getting the juice out of the wormery.

Think all our worms are frozen!!! Checked a few of the pots today and compost was frozen from top to bottom.

It will be well worth waiting for Mairin.

I hope it's for your plants Mairin and not for you.   I've never tried it myself.  Is it any good ?

I get about a half to three quarters of a litre per week. Now that sounds a lot but I cheat. I give them a bit of water spread over the top tier.  What goes in must come out. Albietmaybe a little weaker.   The plants don't seem to know...

I would love to have a wormery, but I would have to delegate Steve to do this job. I am a bit squeemish of wriggly things. Ugh!!!!!!!!!!! Mairin, I have Munstead too. And it is absolutely perfect. I must put up a pic tomorrow. Hidcote is dead as a dodo.

Must re-check my lavender : (

Ivor, I don't add water to mine.  When it rains, it is part-exposed so it gets some rainwater.  I was told before that if you add water, it has to be rain water because the worms don't like the various chemicals in tap water.  Could be a load of nonsense.
