I came upon this carved stone slab today in the grounds of KELLS Priory and ruins Co Kilkenny . The Ruins date back to the 12th Century and later works in the 1500s . The poem is probably later but still interesting to us gardeners today . Try and read the words if you can but clearer images are available from Mr Google .

It is January.

Ice-shards in hoof-prints. The dark way of silence.

Light lying down on the straw-coloured grasses.

We are cold and ill-tempered but dinner is pigs' cheeks.

In church they are eating the body of God.

February's Bridgit's with spring round the corner,

and hard on the spring comes the sweet smell of summer,

three o'clock matins then dawns wild with birdsong

and I'm in the garden, shape-changed to a blackbird

grubbing about in the body of God.

Interesting find, thanks for posting Declan.  The slab looks old but it seems from Google that the poet is still alive!

very much alive Joan and I shall tell her you were pleased she still is! Kerry is also a keen and talented gardener Declan. The poem is in her 2009 collection Only this Room. She has written two striking novels and about six books of very fine poetry. I found Kells very impressive when I visited but I missed the poem so thank you!
