Yesterday I went to visit Knockrose garden in Kilternan with my friend Yuko. I had barely heard of it before, despite having driven past its entrance nearly every evening on my way back from work for several years. Yuko was there a few weeks ago as part of an event and thought I would like it, so went back with me, and she was so right, I loved it!

It's not a huge garden, but there is so much to see there. It's located at the side of the Scalp hill, and some areas of it apparently get no sun at all during winter, so it's amazing to see all the beautiful and healthy plants that grow in those less than ideal conditions. There was an amazing amount of different ferns, which I loved, but also many many other gorgeous plants. The garden is laid out in a succession of small areas which made it even more interesting, as each time I thought that was it, there was more to discover. A real gem, that went straight to the top of all the nicest gardens I have ever visited. Thanks to Yuko for bringing me there!!

Unfortunately, I still cannot upload photos in albums on this site so I will only upload 3 with this journal. I hope it works.

Well, it took three attempts to upload these three photos, but they got there eventually.

Have wanted to visit that garden for a number of years. I watched the video of the garden on The Dublin Group website. The photos you have posted are wonderful and a pity you are not able to post an album. This year for sure I will visit.

What a lovely mature garden! Thank you for bringing it to our attention!

Jacinta D Jacinta D 25 May 2015 12:25:22

That looks a real gem. On my visit 'wish list' now. Thank you, Claire.

Keego Keego 25 May 2015 13:32:07

Claire this garden looks beautiful have made a note of it on wihs list fro places to visit.

did you have to make appointment to visit?

ClaireE ClaireE 25 May 2015 13:51:43

You are very welcome :-) As far as I know you can visit the garden by appointment normally, but during May it is open from 1-6pm every Friday to Sunday. It is really a beautiful garden, and it is in a place which is rich in history too, which makes it even more interesting.

There are a couple of gardens in the Dublin Garden Group that I would really love to visit but most of them would prefer a group - just wondering if anyone else on the site might be interested

Gracedieu Lass Gracedieu Lass 25 May 2015 14:14:12

Yes Mary I would be interested if a few of us went. It can be embarrassing when two just turn up and you feel you are imposing on people. Last summer we visited Lambs Cross and Jean van der Lee's as they were open for the day.

Rachel Rachel 25 May 2015 20:32:50

That looks fabulous! Wow, I would love to see that garden!

Jackie Jackie 26 May 2015 07:34:35

Mary I would be interested too, so let me know when and where and hopefully I can go then.

Claire beautiful photos. Sounds like a beautiful garden. If you can maybe put up three at a time in other journals. Strange you can't upload. Could it be your PC/ Laotop??

ClaireE ClaireE 26 May 2015 09:37:53

I'd be interested too in visiting a couple more. A lot of these gardens are incredibly close to here, I cannot believe I have never seen them.

Jackie, my laptop does not seem to be the problem, as I have tried with our family PC and run into the same issue. We have a high speed fibre connection, and I have no problem uploading photos anywhere else. It's a mystery...

Jackie Jackie 26 May 2015 15:58:16

I wonder Claire if there might be some 'pop up' that could be blocking you. Send an email to Craig and see if he can help you.

What about sometime in July for a visit? Knockrose, Shirley Beatty, Blackrock, and maybe another one? Have a think about it and maybe someone who knows the area could help with suggestions. Have a look at the videos on The Dublin Garden Group to help make a choice.

JoanG JoanG 26 May 2015 22:01:01

That looks a beautiful garden Claire, glad you enjoyed your visit.  I'd also be interested in a group visit and would be happy to do the phoning/booking once we have a date in mind, as I live in the area yet have only seen a couple of these gardens.  Lambs Cross last summer was divine!

ClaireE ClaireE 30 May 2015 18:49:56

Some time in July should be ok for me, up to about the 22nd, not sure if people were thinking of the week-end or a date during the week? Between my work which is quite unpredictable and the girls on holidays with various activities in July, I cannot plan very far ahead so if there is a date that suits everybody, I will do my best to work around it :-)

I also have a "window" of a few days from next week (4-16 June) where I will have one girl in France and the other still at school...

I'm also very happy to help organise. Mary and Joan's suggestions (Shirley Beatty, Knockrose and Lambs cross) seem good to me!

Jacinta D Jacinta D 30 May 2015 19:59:18

I would go mid-week OR weekends. I'll go with the majority.

TheH (Hazel) TheH (Hazel) 30 May 2015 20:45:51

I'm thinking of having an Open Day myself on 19 July this year but would love to visit some of those gardens you've mentioned.

Gracedieu Lass Gracedieu Lass 30 May 2015 21:00:43

I can go any day in July, weekends or midweek.

Jackie Jackie 31 May 2015 00:43:59

July suits me too :).

Hazel I will definitely try to get to your garden this year too. Hopefully I will have my 'driver' with me ;)

Keego Keego 05 June 2015 10:22:51

I would certainly be interested I can do Friday;s or weekend;s sorry about delay in replying

Gracedieu Lass Gracedieu Lass 05 June 2015 21:35:49

Fridays and weekends would be OK for me too. So some Friday or weekend in July. If some on would like to suggest a date we maybe able to get something organised.

Jacinta D Jacinta D 05 June 2015 21:38:14

Friday 10th, or Saturday 11th?

Gracedieu Lass Gracedieu Lass 05 June 2015 21:41:59

Those dates would be fine with me.

ClaireE ClaireE 06 June 2015 22:01:08

That Saturday should be fine with me, not sure about the full Friday but I think part of it should be ok if I cannot be free for the whole day.

JoanG JoanG 07 June 2015 15:06:07

Just catching up folks.  I will phone a few of the gardens over the next day or so to see what we can arrange for either Friday 10th or Saturday 11th July.  As soon as I have some information I'll start a new journal on 'Dublin gardens visit'.  Hopefully it will all work out and thanks to Claire and Mary for getting this going.
