Trimmed thuja by mistake

23 August 2014 11:30:01

I recently trimmed my hedge with a friend helping me...July..he got taken away with himself and trimmed more than I wanted..he topped one of my thuja smaragd at my gateway..now its a good foot shorter than its match. Will it grow up like the other one or should I trim the other to match..they were not at the height I wanted them...ragin!

Trim the other one a bit too, but only a bit.  The other will catch up.  You can take the shears to most conifers to shape them .  I do all the time.

I have a few Thuja and when I bought them the Garden Centre guy said they can be trimmed much more than Leylandeii and they survive being cut to the brown wood - but I haven't been brave enough to try it!

I don't mind the idea of trimming them at all..although in my opinion I don't think the smaragd needs to be trimmed as its very neat already but I have the feeling that since it was topped it will not grow up but out...time will tell.

I feel it will keep going upwards, but this is a slow growing conifer.  Thuya occidentalis group. I have had one since 1987 and I dont think it is over 10-12 ft.  The bright green is very attractive. How tall is your unclipped one? Just curious.

I hope it does fleurette...its 7 feet...the other is 6 feet.
