Fern

Fern

This is a present I got this evening. I hope to get advise about it. It is in the hall at present as it would not stand the bitterly cold weather we have now.

How wonderful to get a present like that! That will keep you busy on this site as we will want a daily update on how it is doing! :)

Dick that little beauty definitely would not survive outside during this kind of weather unless you built a total shelter over it. Not sure which tree fern it is, does it say on the label?

Hosta Hosta 20 December 2010 20:42:28

Wow what a wonderful present.  Good luck with it Dick

Martin, I know you have a knowledge of ferns. There is a tag on it with the name Victoria. I don't know if that has anything to do with the type of fern. The tag really relates to the tag requiring to be attached to the tree.

That is a fabulous present, Dick. I wonder does the label 'Victoria' relate to where it was shipped from? My Dicksonia antartic tree ferns had labels with 'shipped from Victoria' and other license information in big letters.

Dick Dick 20 December 2010 21:13:17

It seems to be like that Rachel.

MartinB MartinB 20 December 2010 21:15:23

You are right Rachel. It could have come from Tasmania or south east Australia, which shows that it from the hardiest area and that it is probably Dicksonia Antarctica.

Beautiful

Rachel and Martin , I found a label in the pot with the tree fern. You are correct. The name is Dicksonia Antarctica. it says soft tree fern boomvaren. There are instructions going with it. I have it inside in an unheated room where it should be safe.

It's gorgeous Dick,, what a thoughtful present, and it couldn't have gone to a better home, I'm sure it will bring you much pleasure over the years as it grows. Merry Christmas:-)

Back home to day. I spent the Christmas in Dublin, travelled by train as The roads in Dublin were dangerous. The garden looks good . I will inspect it later.
