Dawn Chorus

I wonder did anybody stay up from midnight to 6 a.m. I didnt I try to be in bed by midnight. An interesting point was that I hardly slept at all. I will explain later. Due to double glazing in my bedroom window, I didn't hear the birds but in the after noon, I heard them as I sat in front of the house and it wasreally pleasant. However I saw no birds, what a pity?

No Dick, I did not stay up, but I did see the news this evening and how so many people did surprised me. When you live in a rural area you are blessed to hear them.

I heard a bit of it as I leave the radio on all night and woke at some stage.

Neither did I didn't stay up , but around 3am I heard my friend, Mr Robbie Bobbie, chirping away outside the bedroom.

Yesterday, as I worked in the garden, I could not believe the "racket" one single swallow was making as he perched on the telephone line  near me.  When I looked up and  said Hello , he looked satisfied and off he went.

There is so much bird song around these gardens, and yet, 40 yrs ago, when we first brought my parents here, my Father remarked that there was no bird-song!  Why?  There was not a single tree anywhere around, no bushes, hardly a hedge. What a change now.

An interesting point Margot. When my house was built in 1977, there were no trees except those at the side. It is very different now and it is a pleasure to hear the birds but as I said before no sign of no birds nowhere!!!

Dick, you are not alone in not actually being able to see our wee friends.  So often, I hear them chittering away in the trees near me, and cannot see a thing until suddenly, one decides to fly off.   Nothing beats the feedeers sited  close to the house.

I was up very early this morning, about 5.30am with letting the dogs out plus feeding my little granddaughter. The birds were just amazing. I love that time of the morning and there wasn't  stir out of the trees. Compared to the hurricane winds of yesterday. . m The birds were going strong non stop from about 4am when I first woke up. A real joy and great to be alive!!

I did the Darkness into Light walk last weekend - it was fairly magical hearing the birds wake up and accompany us on our walk!

We did the Darkness into Light on Saturday and then the Dawn Chorus walk on Sunday. In bed by 9 last night, needless to say! When we got up at 3am Saturday the cuckoos were singing, and going strong all night I believe.  We used to hear birds all round, but they rarely came into the garden. Now they're all round us and we get dive-bombed by swallows - even in the shed while I'm potting!

I'm back on house-martin/swallow watch - they have a fascination with the porch over my front door - not really where I want a nest !!!!

Fleurette Fleurette 09 May 2017 10:24:57

Better there than right away far up in the outlet of the air extractor as they have done next door.  It's quite blocked.

TheH (Hazel) TheH (Hazel) 09 May 2017 12:45:33

Ah no, Margot - don't fancy getting dive bombed every time I go in my front door! There is a lovely derelict house nearby that they usually end up colonising - I just "discourage" them with a well-directed hose before they get their home established!!!
