Pruning of Bush Roses Complete

10 February 2018 17:42:21

To day was the first mild day for a while so out went Dick to complete the pruning of the bush roses. Equipped with the felco secateurs, there was no problem for some time. However, a few branches seemed to get the better of me. Despite that the felco is so good, I had to resort to bringing out the loppers which had good levering power. Very soon the job was complete, about 100 bushes pruned. Dick was so pleased that that job is done. I noticed that the buds were well advanced. Now all that is required is to collect the prunings and clean the beds of weeds. Rachel gave me the tip about the felco a few years ago but I needed the leverage and we can thank Archimedes for the idea even though he lived about 2000 years ago. My tomatoes are ready to pot up but that can wait for another day.

Sounds like a great days work Dick, the hardwork will have paid off now later in the year once they are flowering.

Peter, I didn't get all 100 roses pruned to day, only about a quarter of that much. I had done about 3/4 a month ago.

I'm always a bit reluctant to prune roses when there is still frost about, but I bow to your much greater experience Dick and hope to get at my own roses tomorrow!

Hazel, I have been pruning roses for some years now, in January & February. There was a time when I waited  until the end of February to prune but Gerry has said that they could be pruned in January and that has ben my system for the last few years.

Well done Dick. It certainly is a labour of love to tend 100 bushes.
