Shopping for the vegetable garden.

Veg,shopping earlier..

Veg,shopping earlier..

From after 4 o clock this evening it was shopping time for more seed potatoes and a few other items for the veg garden. The weather was good, apart from just been a little cool but dry.The first area to be sorted out was with the potatoes. Some early and second earlies were purchased.I bought some by the name of Orla seed potatoes, with them been an early potato crop for the year.British Queens second earlies, and will collect Roosters as main crop. Some Duke Of York will also be added to the earlies. Why i went for the Orla potatoes this year is because they have good texture, flavour, and have a great resistance again our friend the potato blight.Had plans worked out for this year, the intention was to use a lot of the saved potatoes and get away with having to buy to much of them. The spell of bad frost some weeks back put paid to all them except 9 that survived.Seeds were also collected for the veg garden along with Red Baron onion sets. The onions started late last year are ready for out.

The seed potatoes have been spread out in the lower room off the house.[The picture opposite has a reflection of the mirrors from some spread there.] Overall this evening worked out well for the veg garden shopping.Tomorrow will be spent out in the main garden to do some more work on pruning and cleaning up old leaves etc. Some more of the frost damaged shrubs will be removed. All going well the weather will be on all the gardeners sides tomorrow.

John you are prepared for feeding the 5000 with so much produce on the go it really must be fulltime work. What do you do with it all?

Johnplotman Johnplotman 06 February 2010 20:55:46

No problem Liga.It would be more like me thanking you, because for the last day or so i have noticed the first cucumber seedling appear. They will be in the tunnel until weather suits.Next week i will add a picture to my journal of the first sighting here for 2010 with them.

Thanks Cloncaw.Im sort of lucky to have family members [7 sisters] call and 2 of them  into gardening and also call regular to say hello to Mother.Lucky in that respect that most of them live not further than about 15-20 minutes from the house. The sowings etc are mainly timed in successional cropping [little and often sowings]so their will never be to big a supply.

Cloncaw, once the summer arrives and the weather has improved, then from just after 5 o clock or their abouts in the evening i will often stay out there until all hours.[greenhouse etc].Im trying to get to know the run off garden planting by the moon.Higher yields in veg, better flavours, etc.I would like to get in on the hang of it and who knows, maybe 2 problems solved, 1 sowing and 2 catching slugs feasting.
