The grass is greener...

Overcrowded Shrubs battling for space!

Overcrowded Shrubs battling for space!

We have finally made the heart-wrenching decision to move!  We have been thinking about it for a while but have been putting it off, but there is no point in delaying the inevitable as country life no longer suits us.  My other half comutes to Dublin four days a week which is not sustainable, and we want to be closer to family and friends.  So, while I am saddened to think of leaving my garden, I do relish the thought of a blank (much smaller) canvas.  The truth is I could probably completely furnish a new garden with plants that I have in pots and ones that are overcrowding this one.  This picture shows a common mistake - I planted three shrubs way too close together about 5 years ago and now they are all growing in to each other and at least one will have to be removed, but not before I take lots of cuttings!

Ali, sorry to hear you've decided to move back to the big smoke. Think of it as a new challenge, new garden & all! I am sure deep down you want to move back to be closer to family & relations, so embrace it, you'll be happier with people you know around you and support you and your 3 children! Sad to see you leave the GC so soon... J

Hi Janette. Thanks for that. We've made the decision but thats just the first step. I'd say we'll be here for a few months yet!! We still have plenty of time to make an impression in the GC!!

Its aways sad to leave a garden you put so much work into, but if it has to be done. The only mistake I made was I should have taken more with me from my garden. If you have the energy and inclination take as much as you can with you esp. herbatious perennials as they are so expensive, the things I brought with me always remind me of my old garden. Good Luck with the move, and you wont make the same mistakes again I'm sure.

Very best of luck with your move..and do take as much as you can with you..I only took lavender from my old suburban garden when we made the move to the country...and like Headgardener it always reminds me of the old place....have fun with the move...and sure maybe you'll retire back to the country again :)

look at it this way. Like you say, its a blank canvas, and a new garden is always a challenge no matter what size it is. I presume you have made up your mind on the house and area?

Best of luck. I hope it all goes well for you!! I know only too well how hard it is but once you get going and start the planning, you will be fine!

Hey the big smoke is not so bad! when I turn in my drive I always feel happy to be home! and if Im only away for a couple of days the first thing I do is take a walk round my little garden.

Thank you everyone for your kind and encouraging words! Jacinta, we're hoping to end up back home in Skerries, on the Northside! Joybells, you read my mind - the thought that I may end up back in the country some day makes it easier! Monkells, it is daunting but once we take it step by step I hope we'll get there. Me - if I have a suburban garden anything like yours I'm sure I'll have no regrets! And Bill, I'll be sure to divide my Knautias and Asters! I'm looking forward to putting down new roots and branching out!

Best of luck Allison. Leaving any beloved place is very hard. I imagine you'll spend the next while propagating and potting up

Good luck with the move. You sound happier already. I am sure it is for the best. Looking forward to reading about your new garden challenge in Dublin.

Oh, really? I know Skerries - I used a bus Swords-Skerries (we went to Sword to do some shopping). Bloody hell, we waited ages for this bus! :) But I never was in Skerries. I think it's lovely to live so close to the sea! Wonderful idea to move there, and even if you'll have a smaller garden, you have new space for creation.

HeadGardener HeadGardener 15 May 2009 23:16:41

Alison were organising a bus to take us all up to your place to dig the best plants out before you go :-D

best of luck with the move. think of all the extra time you and hubby will have together as a family. he will be full of energy now that he wont have a long commute , and how better to use it than in your new garden

I am delighted to hear of your new move and wish you all the best and it will be an exciting time for you to get your new garden the way you want it good luck with it rosemary.xx

Ah I know skerries like the back of my hand. We holidayed there all the time as kids. And if ever I was to move house, it would be beside the sea. I have a few relatives living there, including my sister. Skerries is great.
