A plant with an unfortunate name.

Lobelia siphilitica also called Blue Cardinal flower

Lobelia siphilitica also called Blue Cardinal flower

This Lobelia siphilitica is an american native with blue flowers that look a little like sage, although they are more showy.  Apparently the name comes from the fact that is was used to cure syphilis. I prefer the name Blue Cardinal flower or Great Blue Lobelia.

Looks unusual for me, I've seen tall lobelia in Liga's garden, but it is purple, and doesn't look similar with your's.

Poor plant.

Yes a horrible name but a lovely plant.  Liga I have Crocosmia 'lucifer' beside it and you're right - the blue and red are very nice together.

I like that blue, I must say.

Lovely Plants Alison is it hardy? and what sort of conditions does it like?

Drumanagh Drumanagh 08 September 2009 00:26:24

It is hardy - its a native of Missouri in particular.  I think it likes praire-type conditions.  I'll try dividing it and keeping seeds for anyone who'd like to try it.

I would'nt mind some seed Alison, where did you get it from originally?

Drumanagh Drumanagh 08 September 2009 14:35:46

I got it from a garden in Longford -  Snaily garden.  Unfortunately I just missed their open day this year so they probably sold most of their plants, but I got loads of good stuff there last year.
