My Ancient Buxus Hedge

My Ancient Buxus Hedge

I'm supposed to be doing an assignment on propagation but I keep getting distracted and reading peoples' journals when I should be studying. I never really thought about it but us gardeners are like scientists doing experiments on an on-going basis! For example, when we take cuttings we are actually cloning plants. I have whole hedges made of plant clones that came from a box tree in my Nana's garden, which has since disappeared but in reality it lives on in my hedge. And when we swap plants they are often the result of division or cuttings that are actually Clones as well. So in reality in many gardens you could say there is an Attack of the Clones going on out there!

Very interesting point, Drumanagh! My garden is full of clones!! Your box hedge looks good as does the whole garden. Keep at the studies so we can all pick your brains!

And it is an on-going clone attack. Many plants would probably not exist today only for us gardeners. Imagine if we had to a family tree of a plant.

I have a rose which came from my great-grandmother's homeplace.  Each generation took it from their homeplace when they got married.  Mother gave it to me and there are still about 3 of those roses still growing at home.  Wouldn't be without it.

love your theory. I love taking cuttings or getting a bit off a plant, it sometimes means more. My mam has some of her mam's snowdrops and when they come up next year and I locate them again I plan to take some :O)

Alison any idea on how to clone someone to do all the work in the garden!!! Now that would be brilliant. I remember a 1970's b movie called Day of the triffids about plants coming alive (terrified me as a child) now you got my imagination going again about cloned plants coming to get me !! :-D

Dividing, taking cuttings, getting new plants from grown ones is one of the aspects of gardening I love the most. Apart from the sentimental element of it which is so great, just watching a small piece of plant grow is brilliant (I think!).

I love the idea of plant family trees! I took snowdrops from my Nana's garden too - its such a joy to see them coming up in the coldest darkest months of the year. Such a nice idea to take things from a homeplace and have that continuity. And so much nicer to grow something that has a history and that you got for free. I think it was Nadine who said she was going to dedicate an area of her garden just to plants she got from friends.

Bill I hope you have managed to take control of that imagination of yours! No doubt if we could grow triffids there would be someone on here who would want to grow them. Not mentioning any names! And what about the little shop of horrors??!

Gardening is a wonderful thing and what we can achieve.  I was wondering how your studing is going have you got much left on your course?

Eh Alison if there were triffid plants I'd grow them as long as they'd eat only rabbits save me a fortune on buying that bunvac 2000!!
