Plug Plants

Plug Plants

Thursday 3rd of March heralds the start of the plug plants in Aldi. 7 varieties to choose from : Gazania Tiger Stripe, Aster Colour Carpet, Geranium Scarlet, Geranium Mixed, Lobelia Trailing, Petunia Double and Petunia Mixed price €2.99. In my opinion it is way too early for these. I know from the Garden Centre that gardening novices DON'T WANT to know that these shouldn't go outside yet. Then they come back to me afterwards and complain that they are all dead. I might get the Gazanias.

They also have Magnolias again. 3 Litre pot €9.99 Same varieties as last year: Soulangiana, Stellata or Susan.

Good selection there, the Magnolia l got last year in Aldi is full of buds so here's hoping!

Would be very tempted to get Stellata.

I agree with you Jacinta, far to early for those plants! must be frustrating when people buy and plant out and then blame you when they die!

I wonder would the plugs be ok to start in my front porch?

Jacinta Jacinta 21 February 2011 19:46:43

Colleen, I would be more inclined to actually keep them in the house for the first week. Then maybe transfer them to the porch. Best of luck with them, and you are very welcome to Garden.ie   Hopefully the site will fulfil your expectations.

Although it is early, I'd pot the plugs up, and as Jacinta says, keep them in the house for a while and then put them in porch, perhaps with a fleece on of a night.  Having said all that I don't know how big the plugs are.  If really tiny, wait until they look strong before potting on.

I love Magnolias but they are usually so expensive, will definately be heading to Aldi for them.
