Seedling

A few months ago I posted a journal enquiring about a seedling of something growing beside the Lower Pond. Fran suggested that it looked like an apple seedling. Fran, as you can see it has grown a fair bit since then and is looking very healthy. It's now about 8 inches tall. Does it still look like an apple? As you can see on the ground just beside it, there are fallen apples from Malus 'Red Sentinel',

Waiting and watching ..............

Doubt any apple seeding would have leaves at this time of year.................

Jacinta Jacinta 16 January 2012 22:48:14

Silly me. Why did I not think of that.

Anyway the leaves don't resemble those of any apple tree that I have seen. But you were convinced before. I believed you, Fran. Not anymore. I'm disappointed now. :(((

It looks like the leaves of an evergreen alright, rich green and glossy. But they are serrated. Like nothing I have growing here in my garden. Must have been from Birds' Dream Dropping!!!

Looks like a young hawthorn plant to me, the leaves might be a bit bigger on yours though.  Holm oak  maybe if it's evergreen.  Is the malus grafted?  It could be a sucker coming from the root stock.  Can't find my tree book, very frustrating.

Anne, as Fran mentions, apple trees are bare of leaves right now, so it's not that. And it can't be a sucker as the 'Red Sentinel' is growing in a big pot beside it, not in the ground. And I think 'Red Sentinel' grows from a dwarf root stock.

As for hawthorn, I wouldn't know what that was like 'close-up' if it jumped up and bit me. I would really like an answer as I would prefer to pot this up and keep a close eye on it until it's identified.

I shall search again for my tree book so......

Much appreciated. But don't lose any sleep over it please.

Right not hawthorn, Holm oak still a possibliity as the young leaves are serrated.

Jacinta Jacinta 17 January 2012 18:22:28

I don't think I have ever seen a Holm Oak. This should be interesting.

Just on the phone to Greta a few minutes ago. She had seen the photo of above and reckons it may be a Hibiscus seedling (the indoor type)????????

If my first choice is wrong then I would agree with Ladygardener's suggestion------a Holm Oak.

I may e-mail this photo to Gerry to get a positive id!

Anne, thanks for all the trouble you have gone to.
