Braving the elements

Mahonia 'Winter Sun'

Mahonia 'Winter Sun'

Was chatting to Clara this morning and she was saying the Southside was a good morning. Not here though. After shopping I got out togged out for the elements regardless. I spent a bit more time planting up stuff on the new Pond Bank, like an un-named Sedum that has already seeded from a previously planted plant, Crocus 'ruby giant', white Forget-me-nots (Myosotis), and Fritillarias. Also planted the Alliums 'purple sensation' that I got the other day into the greenhouse border. They will accompany my Thalictrum and ..........brain dead...... can't think of it. I'll edit this tomorrow. Anyway, they are lilac, so will be lovely together.

Planted up Iris hollandica into a pot as I am a bit limited with where I can plant them right now. Potted up my new Camellia and took it out of the ferocious winds. After all, it's only a baby!  And filled up the bird-feedBibers again. They are hungry little beggars.

22.38 Bing! The light bulb goes on!  Perovskia 'Russian Sage'!!!

Very windy here in Waterford today but we have at long last finished the back garden. The Mahonia looks lovely. You did plenty of work despite the bad weather. Mary

Mary, have you don your spring pruning and pollarding yet?

Gracedieu Lass Gracedieu Lass 21 January 2012 23:20:40

Rachel, we have most things pruned at this stage. Hydrangeas have not been dead headed and fuchsia and penstemon will be left until early March. Mary

Okay, thanks for that, Mary. I did two hydrangeas recently but then thought better of it. Good point about the Penstemon and Fuchsia and probably the grasses. Trying to figure out if I should pollard the Paulownia yet!

Jacinta you got a great days work done today - I bought Charity at Johnstown lovely shrub for Winter interest

Rachel, I would not divide grasses until March and we have left our Paulownia grow into a tree, so I don't know if it is too early to pollard it now, however my friend Iris lost her Paulownia last winter and it was a large tree. Maybe prone to late frost. Mary

Okay, thanks, Mary. It's vey hard to not just 'do the lot' when I'm at it.
