Shrub for the front

10 April 2012 21:20:44
Sambucus R. 'Sutherland Gold'

Sambucus R. 'Sutherland Gold'

Was off early today, but with all the torrential showers all day, I really wasn't in form for gardening when I got home. However, during a brief respite, I had a proper look at plants in waiting. I bought this shrub from the 'reduced trolley' last year and it really deserves a good home. I want to be selfish and just plant it somewhere in the back so I can enjoy it. Realistically, I have nowhere for it here. So I reckon it will get planted in the gravel out front where it won't really have much competition, and therefore will hopefully reward me with its fullest potential in time. If I start taking too many photos of plants in the front, the neighbours are definitely going to send for the 'men in the white coats'.  :)

its a recession there are not as many men in white coats anymore,

Jacinta Jacinta 10 April 2012 21:38:43

Ha ha good one, Michelle.

As regards suckers............now I'm being put off it. But only ever so slightly!!!

Ha ha Ruth, I live in a very 'settled' estate. It's mostly people in their 60's and upwards living here, only a few people on our road actually go out to work. It's more the people walking past that I'd be trying to avoid.  :)

I bought and planted Sambucus racemosa 'Plumosa aurea' recently. It has beautiful golden dissected leaves. Your one looks great.

I love that one and I know exactly what you mean about the front but I reckon it will be good to see it when you arrive home in the evenings - it will give you a lift.

Sambucas are lovely shrubs they can grow very big but the good thing is that you can prune them back hard and they will come back as good as ever - I have never known them to send up suckers Kitty would you be thinking of sumach which sends up loads of suckers just a thought - One advantage of living in the middle of nowhere Jacinta no neighbours to worry about

TerriShoos TerriShoos 11 April 2012 12:01:13

I was out the front in the rain yesterday trying to get the perfect photo of the perfect rainbow - passing neighbours must have thought I was nuts. But not as nuts as the carful of ladies who caught Alan in his dressing gown and wellies taking out the bin at 7am on Bank Holiday Monday!!

Lovely looking plant Jacinta, should be nice grown in your gravel.  And as for taking photos in the front garden, my neighbours gave up on me long ago ... but at least I keep them amused.

kitty kitty 11 April 2012 13:26:42

jacita you could have loads of small ones and it will fill spaces for free if you dont mind it doing that. lol terri that must have been some sight that hour of the morning. my neighbours prob think i have lost the plot but dont care love my garden to bits even if it isnt finished yet

kitty kitty 11 April 2012 13:31:31

the one i have has a tinge of orangey red in some parts of  the leaves and suckers but i will take them up and pot them and have some extra plants for free

Jacinta Jacinta 11 April 2012 22:25:51

With pleasure, Peri.

Periwinkle Periwinkle 11 April 2012 22:31:03

:))) Confession time: I was looking through a note book today and saw a note that said "Geranium for Jacinta" - I have not got a clue what that was about, do you? I can only apologise as Im sure you never got it. (I know, not much point in making notes if I dont read them!)

Jacinta Jacinta 11 April 2012 22:33:35

Ha ha. Peri, maybe it was 'Wargrave's Pink', which I think I got. Maybe not from you, but I have it in a pot. Can't think of anything else it might be.

I do that all the time.  :)
