Pot Luck!

'Frost-resistant', Not 'Frost-proof'

'Frost-resistant', Not 'Frost-proof'

During last Summer I bought a lot of pots. I got them very cheap and decided to try and have as many as possible the same. I planted 7 blueberries into pots identical to these. And they look great. But I have just been out there. In the centre of my garden I have 3 of these pots also planted up with cyclamen. A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the birds, especially blackbirds, were pulling them up. Now they look terrible. But thats not the problem. All the pots have split and broken with the cold weather. If that happens to all my blueberry pots, it will make me a bit more wary when purchasing new ones. Most teracotta pots would be considered 'frost resistant', which really isn't great. What you want to look out for is 'frost proof'. But sadly, you rarely see them being advertised as 'frost proof'.

Oh dear, it's not only the plants that have suffered.

It's very annoying when thet happens. Did you try sitting them on feet, or stones as I did?

Unfortunately not. I always advise people to do that, but sadly, I never take my own advice. It's my own fault.

Just been looking at your damage and can sympathise, even the plants that I brought in are mostly dead as I brought them in too late. Your agapanthus will survive and if not ask me for a piece as I have quite a big one that I could manage to chop a bit off.

Don't know if this will help but I have always been told to put chunks of styrofoam in the pot under the soil. When freezing  expands the soil it squeezes the styrofoam and there is less pressure on the pot. I do appreciate your comment about my bird report. " Academicians" often have closed minds because they know everything! I believe that my woodpecker was hungry because it was horribly cold for days and the insects weren't moving under the tree bark. Next time I'll take a photo!

Christmasrose, the only way they would believe me is if I had been able to take a photo. Impossible, as the boundary fence is like a thick chicken wire wrought iron and couldnt get a photo through it. Shower of 'Doubting Thomas's'! I wasn't impressed. I actually have a 2 inch layer of polystyrene in these pots, didnt seem to make any difference. But as you can see, the damage has been done to the tops of the pots. :(
