Split along it's length

Split along it's length

I bought a Callistemon (bottle brush) a few years ago, it did not do very well. I moved it and gave some TLC and it put on lots of new growth, I even thought it was going to flower last year, but it did not. Had great hopes for it this year.

While out in the garden the other day, I noticed it was looking very sad. On looking closer, it could see that all the new growth was hanging down. I thought the snow had broken the branches. When I cut the branches back I noticed the branches were not broken, but had totally split into section along their lengths.

Has anyone seen this before?

Was it the weight of the snow or did the frost split the branches?

Ooooh is there NOTHING green left on it at all, Fran? You know that Callistemon likes slightly acidic soil?

The shrub is now about a quarter what it was, but at least there is life.

It's also a bit tender. Never seen that before. If you scratch the bark is there green underneath?

And if there IS a bit of green, give it a good top-dressing of ericaceous compost.

The plant or what is left of it, seems to be fine, so fingers crossed.

Top-dress anyway!

Think they are a bit tender Fran. Two of mine have also died. :(

Now you have me worried Fran. As I was looking at the shrub border today from a distance I sort-of vaguely thought 'that bottle-brush doesnt look too good' but then forgot to examine closer. First thing tomorrow.:(

I lost mine in Jan last year.  Won't be replacing it unfortunately, too tender.  Hope yours pulls through!

Lost mine a couple of years ago so decided not to replace it - just as well given the last 2 winters, hope it recovers.
