Re-thinking the Situation

Re-thinking the Situation

While in Kildare the other day, I spotted a lovely yellow flower growing in my brother in laws garden. very like a buttercup, lovely bright strong yellow. So I dug some up and even brought extra to share around a little.

I googled it the other, day and discovered it's called Celandine. I just did some more homework on it, and discovered it's a wild flower, and tends to spread a good bit. I think I may be re-thinking this decision.

A real case of, look before you leap...............

Think the old railway would be the best place for it ! :-)

Hosta, thought of that, but this plant likes open damp areas.

Fran,

They are presently in flower in the ditches, usually low down in a damp shady spot. They do get around very quickly. There is a nice cultivar called 'Brazen Hussey' which has dark bronze foliage and yellow flowers as well as many other differently flowered ones, bronze flowers, white flowers, double flowers etc. A nice little thing.

They grow under the trees in the park, Fran, but I would hesitate to put them in the garden

You'll see them in woodland areas Fran - nice in that setting!

Oh that's lovely, Fran. I hope you didn't throw it in the bin!

Same thing happened me years ago Fran, with Feverfew!!

Gracedieu Lass Gracedieu Lass 28 February 2011 19:42:17

I love Feverfew; Mary hates it and considers it a weed - well, it does seed about a bit. I have a few plants in out of the way places where I can still enjoy it.

Lemon Verbena is another one she banished from the garden and I loved it.

Can see why you liked it but if it's invasive I'd steer clear.

Jacinta, you are wellcome to some, but you have been warned. Not going in my garden that's for sure.

I was only admiring it the other day in the wood beside where I live.  It was all along the bank of the river it looked really pretty.

Jacinta Jacinta 01 March 2011 17:25:12

Yes please, Fran. I will try a small bit. And see how it behaves. Thanks.

lovely flower and when not much else in flower.  a weed is only a plant in the wrong place i would plant it in my wild area under the trees

Greenway, if your interested in some, send address via message and will get some to you, no problem.

Celandine - like they say, you can't see the wood for the trees - you won't see your garden for celandine.  You'll be knee deep and will definitely need counselling after you've tried getting rid of it.  Don't come crying to gdn.ie and besides you're too far away for me to come visiting when you take to the bed.   I used to go and see it every year in local woods - it's like the wild wood anemone, lethal in a back garden!!!
