Winter Cyclamen

04 January 2010 20:47:36

I planted some red and white cyclamen for some Christmas colour. They looked great, then the frost came and as we all know is still with us. What i did notice was that the white plants suffered first, with flower showing frost burn and then flowers and leaves drooping completely. The red plants followed a few days later.

I had a quick look at the plants  this evening, there are signs of new flower buds coming through, the leaves are looking a bit livelier also. It is great to see a plant that can deal with this weather so well. One last time I noticed was that the plants that are planted in the ground seemed to suffer less than the plants that are in the pots at the door.

Yes Fran, I noticed mine in the containers at the front looking rather sad. Wondered if it was because of being in full sun when it shines on the frost?

Fran, Daw!  Ha ha. The plants that are in pots, are raised, therefore more exposed. Therefore, they are more susceptible to frost damage.

It would be the same with ponds. A raised pond is more susceptible to getting frozen than a sunken pond, because the ground holds onto quite a good deal more heat. Daw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now Fran, do you remember several months ago Spider asked a question about planting a plant that "herself indoors" wanted planted but he wanted to wait until the wall was built.  What followed was almost a Lisbon Treaty debate with Jacinta, Labourer and myself saying plant it with you and Spider saying no.  Now you know why we said yes!  I could say "I told you so" but that would be mean wouldn't it?

Now Mairin, if you remember the rest of the story, when Spider went to plant the plants, they could not be planted, why, because  another foundation from another wall was in the way, he stayed quite then, I will stay quite now........ no comment.

Who said men can't be diplomatic.......
