Yipee! We Can Swim Again

Yipee! We Can Swim Again

Today is the first day since about the 23rd November that the ducks have been able to swim in the pond, it's hard to believe the ice lasted for 7 weeks. There were small areas not frozen early on but since beginning of December it was solid looking like it was going to thaw and then freezing again. Over the last few weeks the ducks have been making use of the flood water ponds on the fields or flying off to bigger lakes in the area. Even today there must be ice beneath the water as they swim a bit and then seem to climb up walk on ice and then swim again. Wonder will the swans return they came back to the flood water until the dogs chased them would love to have a resident pair will just have to keep wishing and hope it comes true.

A definite sign of spring! You have had such a long time with very low temperatures.

Temperatures up yesterday 11c and tonight 9c just shows how frozen the pond was it's great to see the ducks back on it, we've been feeding them over the winter to encourage them to stay seems to have worked.

I was looking back over your journals Geraldine and noticed the one about the paper whites, never heard that before so will be keeping a nose on them to see if mine need to go out too, probably would take me a while to figure out as I had no idea they were supposed to smell bad so thanks for the tip, learn something new every day on this site:-))))Delighted to see your ducks happy again.

Isn't it great to reailize spring has almost arrived.

Cloncaw Cloncaw 15 January 2011 18:38:16

Wellie I haven't a problem with the Paper White Narcissi I have never grown them before so didn't know what to expect as from other journals it seemed the scent was not good.

Thanks all for the comments it's great seeing the ducks travel around the pond like battleships and to see Jeremy Heron back standing like a statue now the pond has defrosted.
