I've Had Enough

I've Had Enough

After the look around decided to go back to the bed on the NW side of the house although this bed looks south so gets quite a bit of sun. In 2007 was given some artichoke plants and the first 2 years they looked great but last year maybe it was the freeze they didn't perform as well although the crowns do add great colour at a height and looked great in the snow. Decided the first job was to dig these up and see could I rejuvenate them started with a spade then decided that maybe the fork would be better however it wasn't long before the fork decided it had had enough as there was a crack and off snapped the handle - another one bit the dust. Undeterred continued on removed all the roots any advice on how to make new plants - will they grow from chunks of root? Dug some of the used compost  into the soil pruned back the budelia in the corner and removed any weeds as soon with daffodils and tulips up it would be difficult to do this work. Then raked over the rest of the upper bed removed all the brown foilage fronm the lLadies Mantle so many little selfseeded plants growing, have now to decide on whether to replace the artichokes or change the planting. After lunch started the lower terrace of the NW bed and decided that the mint had become too invasive and spent a long time removing running roots think the daffodils and other bulbs will appreciate being able to emerge unhindered. Loosened up soil around other plants removing any weeds and brown leaves, there are artichoke plants in this bed too tried to dig them up but need some manpower so they may get a reprieve as there are lots of bulbs planted in front of these. Finished off cutting back a hardy geranium to encourage the new growth so in all happy with my days work came in at 5:15pm.

wow you got some amount of work done. Weather was horrible in Galway today but it did clear up this evening. Did not even get a walk around the garden today.
