Vegetable Garden.

14 March 2017 22:49:11

Yesterday I spent my time working in the vegetable garden weeding and freshening the beds to have them ready for the coming season. Planted the potatoes which had been 'chitting' in egg boxes on the garage window sill. There will be enough purple sprouting broccoli to pick for a meal by the end of the week. The broad beans are in full flower and looks like there will be a good crop. We have grown about six different types of garlic this year, so looking forward to tasting the different varieties. I also noticed that some asparagus spears are an inch or so above the ground. I adore asparagus and it has to be one of the nicest vegetables to grow. Sowed seeds of leeks and kale and will sow some lettuces and scallions into modules in the next few days. We always force rhubarb to have it early in the season and it has been delicious over the last month or so.

Oh my goodness! So much already done and my poor screeds of vegetable beds still undug, unmanured, unsown and unnoticed. Well done indeed. I must resisit all rocks from now on and be a good gardener! Sr Josephine would give you both A plusses!

Looks great, Mary. Well done.

My goodness Mary that's all looking very professional indeed. You have been very busy and a lovely selection. Plus such great looking beds too. No shortage of veg this year in the Tobin household ;)

'Looks great', she said. Then I went to look at your album. One could be fooled into thinking it's midsummer in Waterford already.

Aren't the flowers of Broad Beans just so beautiful.

Super work and sounds like you are well on top of things.

Looks super Mary . I love the raised beds . I haven't done that in my veg patch yet but the back might persuade me shortly . Spreading washed stone here in Tipp today and the spuds ready to set !! Grrrr . Isn't the home grown garlic brilliant ? I love experimenting with it. Iam deliberately holding off on early sowing this year .

It is so nice to be able to eat fresh veg from the garden and grow vegetables that can be expensive to buy and are not always at their best. Thanks for the kind comments about the garden and I do feel that vegetable gardens can look pretty.

Declan, the raised beds are very easy to looks after and it never becomes daunting. Totally agree about the garlic and I have not bought garlic to eat in over thirty years and I can supply my three sons with it for the year.
