Old and New.

17 July 2017 14:20:04

I have just purchased Shirley Lanigan's new book 'The Open Gardens of Ireland'. I started to read it but was drawn to the book she wrote in 2001 'Guide to Irish Gardens' published by O'Brien Press. Both books have the same format, but as I was reading her new book it brought back memories of other gardens no longer surviving and gardeners no longer with us, that I started to read her old book. It was sad remembering the many lovely and generous people that I have met through gardening over the years, but also the great times we would have shared in their gardens.

The number of gardens open to the public have increased since the 2001 book which is great to see. Also lovely to see members of Garden .ie from most counties included in the new book. However, looking back at the Waterford listing only one of the private gardens listed in 2001 is included in 2015 edition, so well done to Margaret of Abbey Road Gardens,  who in 2001 drove myself and George Kavanage to the launch of Shirley's  book in Dublin. Lismore Castle and Mount Congreve, as well as Tramore House, now The Lafcadio Hearne Japanese Garden are still included A little snipped from Shirley's account of our garden in 2001 'The stone wall holding up the beds is eye-catching and well built' and still standing today. Well done Paddy.

This book is a must have for anyone who loves visiting gardens, so buy it and put it in the car, because you never know when you will need it. My old edition is a little brown now from the many years travelling the roads of Ireland.

The car seems a good place to store that book safely, and there for you when you least expect it.

That's a lovely journal Mary. It's nice to have an up to date book to look at  especially as you have the other edition also. Nice to be able to look back and compare and yes sad in some ways. But as you say many more people have become interested in the garden over the years and now open them to the public. Glad to hear that wall is still standing. Well done Paddy :)

Shirley is a lovely lady whom I got to know well

through a totally different activity when our two daughters competed together in Athletics in Kilkenny. Small world .

Jacinta, the book has introduced us to many gardeners over the years who have become our friends.

Jackie, good to see the numbers of gardeners increasing in a time when the size of gardens are becoming smaller.

Declan, I know Shirley well and she is a lovely woman.

I saw this book on sale yesterday but passed it by. On your recommendation I think I will go back for it.
