Busy Time in the Garden.

This time of year can be one of the busiest times in the garden with bulbs to plant, pruning, clearing herbaceous plants, weeding and of course the never ending collecting of leaves. This week the weather has been ideal for all these jobs and Paddy even managed to cut the grass last Sunday. Finished planting my tulips into pots today and of course I have promised myself not to buy anymore. I have dreaded the Visa bill coming through the letterbox over the last two months as I have bought so many bulbs.

Had a break from my own garden on Thursday and went on a road trip to Kilmacurragh and Mount Usher and ended up in Wexford at a talk given by John Anderson, former head gardener of Mount Usher. It was a fantastic talk about the  gardens of Mount Usher, Inverewe in Scotland and Exbury gardens on the south coast of England where John has been head gardener until recently.

I have started picking Iris unguicularis for the last two weeks and these will keep flowering from now until February/March. We are so lucky to live in a country where the climate allows us to have something flowering all year round.

Hoping the weather continues to be mild for the next few weeks as I have lots more work to do.

My, oh my! Doesn't Paddy look so happy in the garden.

I have yet to plant the last of my Mr. Middleton bulbs. But it'll have to wait until the early days of next week. It's to be quite cold this coming week.

A very happy chap, Jacinta. You have plenty of time left to plant tulips, but the snowdrops and crocus are breaking the ground already.

Such lovely Autumn colour in your garden Mary! I must look out for that Iris! When is it planted to flower at this time ?

It is not a bulb Hazel, so can be planted anytime of the year and it is also evergreen. It grown from a creeping rhizome.  There are some nice named varieties.

The colours are fantastic.  Your garden looks gorgeous. You're right to count your blessings for the climate.  I had no idea how good we had it untill i moved to Boston.  Fabulous city but oh my the winters.... Counting the months till I'm back in Ireland.  Meanwhile I'll enjoy your beautiful pictures. Thanks for posting! Suzy x

Mary I love that first photo of your garden and the view beyond!

Today was the first day in a while that I could actually get near the garden and I loved it too. Did a bit of clearing up of two circular beds and my goodness the amount of stuff that came off them was unreal! Also lifted one or two Dahlia that I want to make sure dont die in the ground. Overall a fab day. Great photos!

I see you have started having young visiting people in to do all the boring tasks Mary. Is he Lithuanian by  any chance. Your garden is as always a wonder to behold.

Suzy, enjoy your time in Boston, but there is no place like home.

Jackie, that photo gives a nice view of the river. It is hard to take a chance on the 'special' dahlias being left out over the winter months. It was a gorgeous day yesterday and it amazing the amount of stuff which come off the garden at this time of year.

Peter, you spotted the school sports gear on the student from Ard Scoil in Limerick.

Lovely photos of your garden Mary, it's beautiful at any time of year but especially so in autumn.  Paddy looks the business but then he has a big job to do!
