On Sunday we visited Brendan's daughter-in-law and had a lovely time with her and her four lovely daughters. She is an "occasional" gardener and this summer she invested in some plants from Aldi but didn't get around to planting them.

She decided the plants would have more chance of survival in my garden so I was delighted to get a present of some plants. One was a variegated Pieris but the rest are a mystery to me. She says they are climbers so I'd really appreciate any suggestions as to which they might be so that I can plant them in the right place! I know some of you have Aldi nearby and may even have bought the same plants!

Today was a bit busy with other stuff, but I did get a couple of hours outside in the lovely weather. I finally planted the wallflower seeds I bought earlier. Yes, I know! They are over a month late but I reckon that if I didn't plant them I DEFINITELY wouldn't have any walllowers next year, but this way I may be lucky!

I am gradually working my way through the weeding of all the beds in the back garden so that I don't have to face the front :-(

I hope we can get agreement on the cattle question soon so that I can move on.

I know I know the first one. But I'm a bit brain-dead at the minute.

Good idea to sow those seeds I bet the ground is so warm that they will spring into life! Think I may do the same meself! Hope you liked Elizabeth's arch!

nice pressies to get

Just googled Dipladenia - it isn't frost hardy - guess its another candidate for the greenhouse this winter! The other two are a bit non-descript so maybe I'll pamper them too and see what the spring brings :-)

Peter - the arch is brilliant!

Is plant 3 - Tibouchina (glory bush).  See Irish Garden Magazines August and September?

TheH (Hazel) TheH (Hazel) 03 September 2012 23:13:31

Eilish - just googled it - you could be right! Unfortunately the plants came to me with no labels and this one is pnly barely alive! I'll wait in hope as that looks like a lovely plant!

Jacinta Jacinta 04 September 2012 06:43:17

Tibouchina is a gorgeous plant. But sadly, another one that needs winter protection.

so nice to get new plants...

They will move in tot he greenhouse at the first threat of chilly weather! This fits well with my plans for the winter - since the tomatoes were a disaster this year I'm going to give them a mis next year and instead I will try to fill the greenhouse over the winter with various FLOWERS and stuff that will appreciate the TLC of the greenhouse. Fuschias are top of the list - I have a Kalanchoe there already and some of the pretty Rhodicitron from Fran looking very happy in there so the newcomers will have good company :-)

You mention the tomatoes Hazel. I have had them ripe up to about a week ago but they are remaining green at present. I think you put double wrap inside as did I. I left it on and wondered if this was the reason.

TheH (Hazel) TheH (Hazel) 05 September 2012 15:08:06

I took the bubblewrap off but then had to put up nettng to shade the greenhouse way back in March when the sun was actually shining! I only took the netting down last week, and even with the lovely weather this week it's still only two or three ripening every few days!

Jacinta Jacinta 05 September 2012 15:16:10

I never put any bubble wrap on mine, but like you, only two ripening each day.
