I didn't get around to lifting any of my dahlias last year and so when there was no sign of "Catherine Deneuve"I was really disappointed but lo and behold - at the end of July she suddenly emerged and this week she has finally flowered. But the colour is not as orange as it was in previous years. Does anyone have an explanation for this I wonder?

Anyway she is still very pretty!

The other photo is Helianthus Decapetalus which was being totally overshadowed in the Main Herbaceous border but with the construction work going on some of the competition has been removed and there she is in all her glory! Dead-heading is the trick with this lovely daisy and I like it because it doesn't seem to need staking.

Hazel I havent lifted my Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff since I brought it here and you know its the only Dahlia that really has come on the best! Lots and lots of blooms on it this year, its best so far. So Im thinking of not bothering lifting any this year and see what happens!! AS regards why the colouring is different Ive no idea, will need an expertise to advise you there!

I love the third photo, that Helianthus is fantastic and as you say deadheading is the way to go! Ive so many different flowers here at the moment and all still flowering due to lots and lots of deadheading.  Its beautiful

Do you not have slugs, or do you wage a religious war against them?

Yes a lovely colour against that foliage. I think I have that Helianthus. I got it from Ladygardener some years ago and it thrives!

My sister Elizabeth and I have been trying to find a "Yellow Daisy" that we remember from the house we lived in up to 1958 or so - and our memories are not quite identical! I was a child so I remember them being as tall as me, but Elizabeth who was more grown-up remembers them being not so tall - I remember them having truly rough leaves but she is not clear on that - so this one comes close for me - but the leaves are too smooth. Anyway, I love this one for itself too!
