Its been a long nine weeks. My decking had become so dangerous that I needed to bite the bullet and replace it with something safer so ater a lot of research and planning the project to replace the rather large deck with a patio got under way.

Week one and most of week two was dismantling the deck. Although there were quite a few rotton boards and timbers there were also lots of sound ones so the timber had to be sorted as it was dismantled and indeed there is still an awful lot of it still to be dealt with.

So I won't bore you with a blow-by-blow account of the project, but for anyone interested might like to browse the album!

The patio project was also an opportunity to add a sheltered pergola outside my back door which I have wanted for ages - and today was the day when the covering on the pergola was finally put in place!

Now all I have to do is clear up the building site that used to be my garden ..... and maybe get a bit of REAL gardening done!!!

P.S. - album to follow tomorrow I hope!

Gosh, that slabbed patio is looking a real treat, Hazel. It blends in lovely with the house. You won't regret having taken up the decking. And I love your new Pergola. Can't wait to see the album.

It looks a brilliant job and worth all the mess over the last few weeks. The covered in pergola will allow you to use it all year long. I am sure will be have many a happy evening sitting there and enjoying your garden.

That looks terrific, Hazel, enjoy! Decking is definitely not a great idea in a rainy country like this.

That's a lovely job, Hazel, you must be thrilled with how your patio has turned out. And the pergola gives you shelter and screening.  Enjoy sitting and sipping!

Such a great change, a know a lot of people getting rid of decking, it is high maintenance and can be quite dangerous, probably a good idea at the time.  Enjoy it and love the new pergola too.

Now do be careful on the new patio because slabs and flags can be slippery as well! Sez I who knows!!!!!. But isnt it great to have it done at last and sure even if it takes a while to clear up it will be sooo worth it sipping your gin and tonic on that fabulous new patio. well done inded. Brendan is so proud of you!!!!

Thanks everyone! Peter - don't worry, the slabs are chosen because they have quite a non-slip surface but yes, one always has to watch one's step! The final bit will be fitting of handrails on the steps but they are still in the pipeline .....
