Get-Together 2018 - Options - please let me know!

05 December 2017 19:38:41

Hi everyone. Since there have been no volunteers queuing up to take on the get-together I'll just carry on!

Last year we had to move our get-together to Saturday rather than Sunday and this didn't really suit a lot of people.  Johnstown weren't able to reserve the area we needed in the Cafe on the Sunday. So I looked around for another centrally located venue and came up with Ratoath Garden Centre - also easily accessible from the Motorway network, has a cafe, so a possibility. I visited them recently to see if they could accommodate us - but guess what? They also couldn't accommodate us on a Sunday either!

Apparently the entire population now "dine out" on Sundays!!!!!

So the choices are:

Johnstown Garden Centre - Saturday January 13th - their Sale is still on then

Ratoath Garden Centre - Saturday January 13th - they will also give us a discount on any plants purchased.

HOWEVER ....

Ratoath made a suggestion we might like to consider - we could visit there as a group in the Summer and John Lord would give us a guided tour of the gardens and a talk (free of charge) as a second event for the year!

So lets see if we can make this the best ever gathering - just to prove that our "real" club and friendships are not dependant on either a website or a Facebook group but these online connections, particularly garden.ie continue to provide a valuable resource to us on our gardening journey!

Hazel, if Sunday is the preferred day, I was wondering if you considered The Arboretum Garden Centre in Carlow, maybe they could cater for us. However, it maybe to far south for Dublin and northern members.

I love the idea of visiting Ratoath for a garden visit in the summer.

I am hoping to attend regardless of the date or the venue. I do like Johnstown GC.

Either way I won't be able to make it for the Christmas get-together. But the idea of a meet-up in Ratoath during the summer months sounds very appealing. And possibly the attendance won't be as great as the annual get-together, so the Wildflower Cafe may be able to accommodate us. Plus, they're starting an extension in mid January, so a bigger space will mean that their regular customers won't be put out too much.

Love the idea of a second get together Hazel.

Im ok with both options. Hopefully  can attend on 13th.

Am also ok with Carlow Arboretum.

Love the idea of meeting up  at differnt times of the year around the coyntry and maybe visiting a local garden.

????

Personally I prefer Johnstown as the venue, as I think they have more space and a huge selection of plants etc plus a sale!! I’ve been to Ratoath and I did like it but perhaps it was the wrong time of year as I didn’t get that same buzz. But if a Summer visit was on the agenda then maybe that would change my mind. But whatever you choose I’ll be there!!

Either suits us but if I were to voice an opinion I'd go for Johnstown on 13th and Ratoath in summer. We'd have trouble doing Carlow and back in a winter's day, I think. The dog isn't getting younger and there's a limit to his bladder capacity!

I would probably vere towards Johnstown too with regards to choice etc and would definitely love a summer visit to Ratoath.  Thanks again Hazel.

Margie, we have over the years have had visit to gardens in different part of the country, but with more members on FB and very few on the site itself, information about outings have fallen through the cracks.

I've visited a couple of gardens this year Mary, as its my first year on website.

Hopefully will get the chance to visit more in 2018.

There's nothing better than seeing plants in garden settings. I've found the amount I've learned in past year here fantastic.

Enjoy the f.b. page too as it's so handy on phone.

I do like Johnstown too, and it seems to suit those who have to travel some distance, and the idea of a summer outing to Ratoath is definitely appealing!  Our January get-together is a lovely occasion and whever it is, I'll be there.  Thanks so much, Hazel, for organising it again.

Great Hazel, getting the ball rolling!!!

I should be able to make it on the 13th, my preference is Johnstown (but would go to Ratoath or Carlow too). A summer meeting sounds good too, anywhere at all

Hazel, Ratoath garden centre is a good venue with good food and a good reputation...John Lord has created a beautiful garden behind his garden centre, well worth a visit...he is also very helpful and entertaining, he doesnt take life too seriously!

Dear Hazel, have just been looking at all your lovely new changes and the Zen garden is tremendous. I hope to meditate in it some day!  You are very special to continue to go to the bother of organising all the christmas get-together preparations .I also like the idea of the summer get together very much. I do hope to make Johnstown if that's the one decided for Christmas as its a straight run up for me and I think Im free. I was in the Arboretum the other Sunday and we came away because it was so crowded so I very much doubt if they would have a sunday date free. It is indeed a lovely place. Sorry to be so slow in sending this in. have had a bit of a cold for a while. Must try jameson!

I'm easy - I love Johnstown, but Rathoath looks very inviting, so I'd love there too. However, if we do a Rathoath gathering in the summer, I can get to both. Thanks for all your work dear sister.
