February at last!

03 February 2018 00:09:27

Like Dick I always think of Feile Bride as the beginning of Spring so despite flurries of snow and really cold days there has been a bit of bright weather here in Laois the past couple of days.

I'm definitely in line for "Fashionista of the Garden" this year - my usual gardening jacket has a busted zip so I rooted out an old jacket of Brendans and I don't know myself! Since he was nearly 6 ft and I am 5ft 2in it is good and long - it also has a quilted lining and a hood but I must look like Little Orphan Annie in the huge jacket - but boy oh boy I am cosy!

I headed out yesterday to plant a pretty little Campanula in full flower that found its way into my groceries recently. I decided the deeo blue would contrast nicely with the little daffodils in the Rock Garden - but you know how it is, sometimes we can get distracted!

So first of all Chamaecyparis nookatensis 'Pendula' which lives in a half-barrel along with some bulbs needed weeding ... and the crocosmia in pots around it needed a home. So the Chamaecyparis is looking much better and the bulbs seem to have multiplied so they will look great in a few weeks. The Crocosmias are now edging the Shelter Belt so should bring a bit of colour to that area.

And needless to say, when I eventually got to plant the Campanula I had to carry on and weed and tidy the Rock Garden. It was almost dark when I finished so I had to wait till this morning to get the photo.

So I hope we are all welcoming Feile Bride and getting out and enjoying our gardens again!

Ha ha! I bet you look a picture, Hazel. And I guarantee Brendan is thrilled that he still has the ability to warm you through and through.

Really at it Hazel. Despite the low temperature, spring is here. We had heavy rain here last night but it is looking good with so many things in bloom.

Not good at the Selfies Jas - but he is definitely keeping me warm these days :-)

Dick - the  cure for low temperatures in my experience is lots of warm clothes! Bright spring days tempt me outside iven if the temperatures are lower than I would like!

Here in Kildare town it's Spring. St Brigid rules apply. So gardening started proper for me this week.

It's a great time of year and no matter how cold the day is once its dry, we're out in the garden. I've collected (dug up) a ton, literally, of rock so it looks like a rock bed , or wall will be started asap.

Thats's great, Margie! I have used many of the large rocks that were dug up in landscaping my garden and Every time I work on a border I seem to find more stones to use in the garden! It is great to be able to landscape your garden with the rocks and stones that belong in that place! Look forward to seeing the results!

I def like that I can now say its spring even tho the weather is the same and days still short it still feels like we've turned a corner and winter almost behind us.

Yes Spring for me has arrive, even if it is bitter cold at times. Havent had much time in the garden but hopefully this week, although the weather doesnt look great! I am easily distracted too Hazel and end up doing things I had no intention of doing at all....but its great fun doing it anyway!
