Aspenium onopteris for Rachel

Aspenium onopteris for Rachel

this is Martin Rickard studying the frond in order to pick me off the tiniest piece to propogate. What you see in the  other pic is the prothallus which are each about the size of a pin head at present. there is both male and female there and the male has to send his stuff across a film of water under them to fertilise the female and so produce a fern. More primative then seeds where all is done and ready. Please ask anything Rachel.

Do you think I could have a little piece when I come down in June? Pretty please. I have a fern question I am about to post, Martin. I hope you can help.

Of course, but it is only the size of a pin head and needs a lot of care before it can become a fern.

I could do that : )

Rachel - and you did!  Must post a picture of mine, it is doing really well, I will post a picture when I get my camera back!

Linda, how do you find these old entries. I never can. Really glad that yours is doing well too. Maybe you should both join the BPS and avail of the spore exchange, or if not then I could send you both on some spores :-)

Martin, Googling is a great thing - you should try it sometime!  Anyway I googled Aspenium onopteris and your journal entry came up, so I was interested to read up on your previous entry on the male & female spores.   Well done you on producing babies for us - you did all the work & I thought it was only us females!!!!
