I'm a Dryopteris fan because

it looks like a fern should,

it likes limey soils,

it's hardy, 

and it's evergreen.

Thanks guys. Oh Kindred I have grown this fern in the open and in almost total shade and it seems to not mind

Have you any photos of the gleditsia? I've just planted two sunbursts.  They're meant to be very hardy have you found them so?
