23 February 2012 15:36:34

I wonder do any of you have a lovely golden privet in your garden. This shines out through the winter, its lovely small slightly crinkled leaves a joy to behold. Yay and Yay again. I have one potted up for someone on this site for the next time we meet and I have another for anyone who can guess who that person is? yes it is quiz time for all except Fran and Rachel as they have been disqualified.

Martin, that is really weird. I have just come in from walking around the garden wondering where to plant my one. Could not decide, but having seen that photo, my second choice is now my first. Thank you.

The one time I'm sure of winning one of your quizes, I'm disqualified. Can This be appealed to the video ref for a decision................ LOL

Hosta, Rachel and myself are disqualified for talking at the back of the class ;-((

TinaJ TinaJ 23 February 2012 16:01:14

i have one ,but one side of it keeps getting wind damaged

Rachel Rachel 23 February 2012 16:23:31

Disqualified!?! How unjust.  Deborah tried to disqualify me at the Alpine Society talk but that decision was overturned!

Rachel Rachel 23 February 2012 16:23:51

Seriously, that is a beautifully inspirational photo.

Elizabeth7 Elizabeth7 23 February 2012 16:24:31

Oh that one is so lovely I must have a guess.....trees.....has to be Scrubber.?????

Elizabeth7 Elizabeth7 23 February 2012 16:26:47

Fran or Rachel are you open to bribes? :)

fran m fran m 23 February 2012 16:30:44

For a certain piece of ''old wood'' in your garden, just maybe .................. LOL

Seriously, what an awful suggestion to make

Joann Joann 23 February 2012 16:33:45

I think as a fellow limerick woman I deserve it so just cancel the competition Martin (I will give you the brown envelope of cash at the Jimi Blake talk tonight).

But if I have to guess I would say its for Rachel too

Elizabeth7 Elizabeth7 23 February 2012 16:44:09

Joann Cork people just love Limerick folk they are so kind and generous !!!!

Elizabeth7 Elizabeth7 23 February 2012 16:49:31

You could not be referring to OB in such a disrespectful manner however phrased. And there was I saying good things about you.....no justice. !!!

fran m fran m 23 February 2012 16:54:55

God loves a trier .....................

Which do you like most, OB or that fantastic, really really rare Private. There are only a couple of them in the world !!!!!!!!!!!

Rachel Rachel 23 February 2012 16:56:13

Ooh, ooh, I know who it's for!

Joann Joann 23 February 2012 17:08:34

Thats right Elizabeth, limerick folk are very generous especially to each other, dont you agree Martin oh you of the beautiful golden privet!  I would care for it so tenderly and you can give a short drive to Croagh any time to visit it, I'm sure you don't want it going too far from you..................

MartinB MartinB 23 February 2012 18:05:33

Elizabeth I thought that you were from Dublin and a Law could come down heavily against bribes. Joann I have only two that are rooted in pots and these are now thrown out to this page. I can bring you in cuttings tonight if that is any good to you. :-) Fran I must have felt that you needed the picture as I felt compelled to go out and take the shot this afternoon :-) Thanks Rachel for the photographic compliment. Still waiting for my camera, hope we have not been scammed

Jacinta D Jacinta D 23 February 2012 18:13:22

Gosh, I only have a boring green one. That's lovely, Martin.

Elizabeth7 Elizabeth7 23 February 2012 18:21:29

Martin I am a rebel.  Born raised and edgimicated in Cork and then spent most of my life in Dublin until 8 years ago when the call of my Native county lured me home. And very glad  and happy I am that I took the lure.:)

Joann Joann 23 February 2012 18:46:00

Martin I would gladly take cuttings off you and give them a go, thanks!  Will share any that root for me

As for Elizabeth, we all know the folk from the Peoples Republic of Cork always return there no matter how long they are gone, it inbred in them!!!!!!

Hosta Hosta 23 February 2012 20:35:21

Jimi Blake

Joann Joann 24 February 2012 00:18:36

Well I met Martin earlier so now I have lots of cuttings to do tomorrow of the golden privet, big thanks to Martin! Hopefully will root and I will pass some on to the others, Martin still wouldnt tell me who the rooted one is for so I took the brown envelope of cash home again!

fran m fran m 24 February 2012 07:52:02

Martin is so good, hope they root for you.

I suppose now that you have all those cuttings, you won't part with that envelope for that rooted cutting.

It is fun watching, when you know the answer ....................

MartinB MartinB 24 February 2012 08:31:49

This plant is not so showy all summer at all, it is just in the winter it leaps out. It puts on autumn type colours and goes a kind of acid yellow in with the light green. I am not sure of the name but Deb brought it back as a present for me from somewhere. I think that privet is one of the easiest plants to root cuttings from so you should have a dozen of them Joann. :-)

TinaJ TinaJ 24 February 2012 08:43:04

I grew mine from a cutting,as you say in the autumn it goes a lovely colour,it leaps out at you!

Joann Joann 24 February 2012 11:52:02

Ha ha I know what you mean Fran, the offer of a rooted cutting of something nice and we turn into competitive children, pick me pick me pick me!!!!!!

As for the brown envelope Fran I will part with it when I get something good in return, You are also disqualified from that one because you told me it was a Solidago and it turned into a Lupin.........................

Martin is it for Rachel? Or Bruno? Or Conrad? Or Feverfew? Or Elizabeth? Or Hosta? Or LindaB? Or Jacinta? Or Who the hell is it for???????????????

fran m fran m 24 February 2012 12:20:42

Joann I may well be disqualified,

but you see, ........ I'm as snug as a bug sitting here looking at my rooted cutting.

Jacinta D Jacinta D 24 February 2012 12:22:30

I doubt if I would be worthy of such a prize!!!!!!!

But if the recipient were to care to pass it on..........???

Elizabeth7 Elizabeth7 24 February 2012 12:31:33

Ah mmmmmmm    I am withdrawing from the game as I forgot I have one, not as nice as Martin's of course but it would be mean to win another. Of course I would win cos I sent a huge brown envelope to Martin, wonder if he will return it!!!

Joann Joann 24 February 2012 12:50:18

Fran you just be nice and smug, but beware of the thumbtack treatment if you do cross me!!!!!!!!!

MartinB MartinB 24 February 2012 13:26:37

Hey Joann are you allowed to multiguess. Elizabeth I will return the brown envelope; I have lightened it somewhat. Fran I wish you well with it. Oh by the way silent Rachel was given one the other night along with Fran which is why they were both disqualified in seven different languages in which I am fluent at.

fran m fran m 24 February 2012 13:31:37

Martin eight languages,

you also gave me some ''sign language'' LOL

TheH (Hazel) TheH (Hazel) 24 February 2012 23:00:04

Martin - my childhood memory is of a suburban garden on a corne with a golden privet hedge about 2 feet deep along the entire railings which caused major family rows over trimming of same!  - I never realised that it could look so pretty if allowed to grow into a proper shrub! Anyone having successful cuttings I would be VERY VERY happy to give one a new home :-)

Joann Joann 24 February 2012 23:29:36

Hazel if the cuttings I did this evening take then you are on the list for one, assuming that you are not the mystery recipient of Martins already rooted one!!!

Martin was right it is lovely, a nice sort of wavy leaf compared to the regular golden privet we usually see, nice shades of yellow and a lime green, looking forward to having it in my garden.

MartinB MartinB 25 February 2012 09:42:48

Hi Hazel, as Joann says it is a totaly different plant than the usual ones that you find in garden centres. I am actually embarrased to announce who it is for as they might not want it, so I think that I will sneak off quietly. Joann did get the answer right but I disqualified her anyway so I think that I will give the prize one to cousin Feverfew:-)

Jacinta D Jacinta D 25 February 2012 09:52:31

I couldn't think of a more deserving person.

Joann Joann 25 February 2012 16:03:39

You are just like Bruno the Wicklow Italian, you keep it in da famileeeee!

Not surprised I guessed right considering I named so many people, just dont know which the right answer was, giving it to the cousin at this stage probably is the fairest.  Enjoy it Feverfew!
