Diana, where did you get the blocks of mushroom compost. Didnt know you could buy blocks. Sorry dont know anything about mushrooms. But I will hopefully be doing them this year, in the greenhouse.I bought mushroom spores a few weeks back. Just thinking about the stench of manure though, in the heat of the summer in the greenhouse. Maybe it's not such a good idea.

I have put a small amount  into my veg beds where I'm going to grow my peas  so I hope this isn't true Diana.

Don't know I'm afraid, but there are so many different views. As far as I know spent mushroom compost is as it says, spent. Hope all will be ok.

Can't see it doing any long term damage Diana, but yeah, you should ask Jerry, and don't worry you can only learn by getting it wrong sometimes, the amount of times I've done something like that....

Know lots of people who use mushroom compost straight away. The thing to remember is that it contains a lot of lime, but that can be an advantage especially on heavy Roscommon soils. I also would'nt put it in direct contact with plant roots as it could burn. Many people let it rot down because they are worried about what chemicals have been used in the mushroom growing process. What we have done in the past is collect it in late summer/autumn and let it rot down over winter. By spring it will be full of worms. Last autumn we made a new herbaceous border and planted everything straight into fresh mushroom compost. Did'nt want the expense of buying in topsoil. It worked a treat and everything is emerging now. Will take a photo later and post it.

mushroom compost... more you live, less you know :))) have never heard about musroom compost :)
