Hello All.......

Hello All.......

Hello All.......

It is that time of year again, and we have woken from our winter hybernation!!! cant believe its been 6 months since my last post, but i have to say the Autumn & Winter months gives us a chance to catch up on our interests both business and social! anyway as per usual i have spent some time scouring the net for different and unusal varieties of tomato seed to trial this year! looking back over previous years records its obvious to us that the east European varieties of tomato grow much better in our Irish climate, the top 12 varieties in our lists over the past 3 years contains 7 east European types, 3 European and 2 American! With this in mind we have selected 10 new east European heritage varieties for us to trial this year, they are, Bulls Heart, Crown Prince, Golden Heart, Mona Lisa, King of Siberia, Mammouth, Crimson Giant, Russian Giant, Pink Oxheart and Soldacki, will keep you posted as to how they progress, its good to be back!!!

Hi just wondering while your on the site do you know any good chillies to grow in a cold greenhouse i tried some last year and it took ages for them to ripen i was fed up with them by the time they did, but a new season brings new hope so i might try again thanks.

chilipepper chilipepper 23 January 2012 16:41:06

Hi Damo, we have grown many different varieties over the years and all successfully, i have found that in our climate they will not produce ripe chillies till September, i feed mine as you would tomato's, if your looking for an earlier chillie try a verity called "Prairie fire" small bush type can be grown in a pot on a window sil, only grows to about 1 ft and produces loads of 1" chillies! if you would like seed let me know!!

thanks for the advice i'll try that i,ll let you know about the seed, i,m sure i,ll find them online.

Well hello, Sir!

The Dead awakes! Welcome back to both of you. Now don't you be working Madeleine too hard this year.

chilipepper chilipepper 23 January 2012 17:53:49

Hi Rachel, thank you! good to be back, really looking forward to the seasons ahead!

chilipepper chilipepper 23 January 2012 18:02:27

Ah Jacinta, hello to you!!!! was starting to worry! have been back nearly 3 hours and no sign of you!!!!!!!! heard a rumour you hit the glamorous granny circut, but no matter your here now! hope all is well with you, any news?????

Jacinta Jacinta 23 January 2012 18:05:46

Eh, I'll have you know that SOME people have to work for a living. Only in the door. You should be honoured to have me comment on your journal so soon after coming through the door.

Granny? Dave, where have YOU been? He is nearly 2. Oooh, ANOTHER DAVID!!!!! Too many of those!!!

As for the 'glamorous' bit, ha ha ha ha ha I DON'T THINK SO.

Good to have you back.

chilipepper chilipepper 23 January 2012 18:26:51

Work!!! dont talk to me! although ive cut back to about 60 hours a week!!! whats your plan for toms this year???

Jacinta Jacinta 23 January 2012 18:34:11

Jesus, Dave, are you not close to Retirement age? 60 Hrs????????

Undecided still. Should make up my mind in the next couple of weeks. My toms were a total disaster last summer. No sun. Very poor crop. Cayenne peppers did great. I tried overwintering the plant, but looking at it today, it doesn't look like it will pull through. Not to worry though. They blew the top off my head, although Steve loved them. :)

chilipepper chilipepper 23 January 2012 18:50:03

Ah sure every year i plan to cut back! but sure as long as i find time for the right things!! anyway have about 25 varieties of toms on the go this year, also a chilli called Prairie Fire! grew this one last year, only grows to 1ft, lots of 1" chillies, over-winters well, anyway take your pick of what you'd like! because this is the year of your bumper tomato crop!!!!

Jacinta Jacinta 23 January 2012 18:51:46

Dave, you should be encouraging us to grow our own from seed? Not making life easy for us. LOL

I'll let you know. Things a bit 'up in a heap' at the mo.

ladygardener ladygardener 23 January 2012 18:53:12

Thanks for the tips on the toms.  Just to clarify for me though as I'm only getting started on veg are any of these toms, peppers or chillies suitable for growing outdoors as I've no tunnel/greenhouse/coldframe?

chilipepper chilipepper 23 January 2012 19:05:04

Jacinta, tomato seeds? tomato seedlings? let me know, and now i'm back keep in touch! also still interested in the dwarf peach trees! keep me informed......

Jacinta Jacinta 23 January 2012 19:14:09

Will do, Dave. But we didn't even get any in last year. Management was afraid to chance a lot of stuff for fear that they wouldnt' sell. But I'll let my authoritative voice be heard, loud and clear (I can do that sometimes Ha ha).

chilipepper chilipepper 23 January 2012 19:19:36

Thanks Jacinta, keep me in the loop!

chilipepper chilipepper 23 January 2012 19:32:47

Hi Ann, to be honest chillies wont do well outdorrs in our climate but you can grow Prairie fire, a small variety that will only grow to 1ft, ideal on a kitchen window sil, peppers will grow outdoors but will do better in pots than the ground, as for toms there are a few types bred especially for outdoors, have never tried these but some people sing their praises!! i have grown a cherry type called Garden Pearl for the last 10 years or more in window boxes and hanging baskets and it has done really well for us! hope this helps....

Myrtle Myrtle 23 January 2012 19:36:10

Hi Dave, looking forward to reading your journals again.  When should I start my tomato seeds?

Keego Keego 28 January 2012 14:23:58

Hi Dave great to hear from you - You have been my inspiration with my ventures in tomato growing I had a great season with my tomatoes they were a bit late to ripen but anything good is worth waiting for - am intending to grow about 6 - 8 different varieties this year have not fully decided on all of them yet but mostly dictated by what did well for me last year and what the family liked
