Weed Killer

spring border, planted 2009

What did I do today? Lets see if I can remember.

Firstly I removed some self seeded annuals from the annuals border in front of the greenhouse. I did this because I wanted to spray the whole border with weedkiller, which I did.

It was a hard job though as the small sprayer I have gets jammed on. Lucky I didn't have to pass over any other areas to do the job while the sprayer was indiscriminately spraying weed-killer. Note to self - invest in a proper weed-sprayer.  My back is destroyed from bending double too.

I also enlarged the strip allotted to the semi-circular copper beech hedge with my trusty half-moon grass edger.  And I dumped another load  of plants that didn't make it through last winter - mostly Lobelia cardinalis, from seed last year and still in pots. In fact I ended up with a whole wheelbarrow of spent compost from those pots and used it to mulch part of the West Garden.

I don't seem to have done much else today although my back is telling me that I did a whole lot : (

We are all getting old. My back is destroyed from work today too. Love your Spring Border. What length is it, Rachel?

Hi Jacinta, the border is 22 ft from left to right in that photo. Yep, getting old and creaky!

Looks so nice and so big!

I don't like weedkillers, I prefer to do it manualy, and in a gravelled area I would use a gas blow torch.

Spring border looks fabulous, know what it's like to spray like that but someimes it's a necessary evil. Had someone asked to spray all the paths etc wanted it done when the weather was good he put it off saying I needed to wait as weeds weren't up now it's like the jungle hope the breeze dies down and I get it done ASAP.

The spring border looks great.  I must spray some weeds which are in the cracks in the cement and by the wall - both nuisances of places to pull them.

Just catching up on the journals, spring border looks great. I invested in one of those backpack sprayers and it is great, good capacity and you can do all you need in one fill and the nozzles never clog.

Rachel Rachel 05 May 2010 21:31:39

Ha ha, Steno. Did you ever get sunburnt on the triangle between the end of your t-shirt and the top of your trousers - weeders' sunburn?

Rachel Rachel 05 May 2010 21:34:27

I believe that weed killer has its place. it is invaluable for drives etc. But each to his own.

I must look out for one of those backpack sprayers, Pat.
