This is Ridiculous!

This is Ridiculous!

Does anyone remember the story of my Datura, which I grew from seed last year, and how it seems stunted?

There is something seriously wrong with it. Don't tell me it will come on! Look!

On the left is the Brugmansia I grew from seed THIS year, just before I potted it on AGAIN today.

On the right is the tiny Datura which I grew from seed LAST year.

Now the Brugmansia was supposed to get bigger than the Datura but still... they are essentially the same plant.

What on earth is wrong with my Datura?

If you were that small, and a big guy beside you that size, was saying " DON'T YOU DARE GROW" would you grow?   :-0

On a serious note, that is unreal, stunted plant, or just a weak seed.

Well, it's the compost for him if he doesn't grow SOON! I'm sick of molly coddling his sorry ass.

The seeds were very slow to germinate but I assumed that once germination takes place all plants are off on the same footing...

Poor little thing is 'vertically challenged' :) But I have noticed this with some of the seeds I have sown too, mind you they were more ordinary, commonplace ones!

Maybe he or she needs Myrtles journal as I am sure you have given it plenty of love and care but maybe a bit more. Dont know this plant so I should keep quiet .

Datura is a shrub Rachel and Brugmansia is a tropical tree. Would their growth rates be different because of this.

Thyroid problem perhaps?

Mairin Mairin 08 May 2010 23:20:57

Maybe you have a whole new breed?

Rachel Rachel 08 May 2010 23:59:32

Maybe Myrtle's tlc is what is needed all right, Clara.

That doesn't really explain the vertically challenged Datura, Wayne. Daturas are supposedly as vigorous as Brugmansia.

Oh.

I got a reply form Gerry today about something else but it kind of answers the question of what's wrong with my Datura. It seems that old seeds may be lacking in energy and, although they have enough energy to germinate, it is sometimes insufficient to let them grow. I always thought that if a seed germinated then it was okay. This packet of seeds had no 'best by' date and being a little more unusual, may have lain around the shop for many years before I bought it.
