Schizanthus pinnatus
My first annual of the year flowered today.
This marks the beginning of summer for me anyway.
It is Schizanthus pinnatus, the Poor Man's Orchid. I don't think there's anything poor about it!
Beautiful. I love purple flowers. Actually I love anything purple.
Now that I like a lot, lovely, well done you. Hope the summer is good to you.......
Ah congrats. Sumptuous colour. And purple is the colour of passion. You are a 'passionate' person, probably in all sense of the word. Good on you.
Rachel that is beautiful well done you. I am work and it is absolutely spilling down here in Cavan - does not look a lot like Summer Or more worringly maybe it does!!!
Beautiful...nice colour ..Rachel did you grow them from seeds? How tall they are?
its really beautifull. love the colour, but does not feel like summer... windy and cold.
Thanks, everyone. They are mixed colours so I'm looking forward to seeing what else I get.
I sowed this tray of seed on 28 January, Ingrida. The plants are quite tall and need to be staked - about 2 ft. I also grew the Schizanthus mix called 'Hit Parade' but they have not flowered yet. They produce shorter stems and supposedly prettier flowers.
Cold here today too. But my flowers warm me up!
That's beautiful Rachel is it growing outdoors.
Great, great:)!When all them will be in flowers, have to be beautiful.
Rachel I know you are really into orchids. i have never grown any. Is it difficult? There is nothing poor about this one.
Ladybird, it's in the greenhouse. I haven't planted anything from seed outside yet except the peas.
I think they will be nice, Liga. The flower is quite small but if there's lots of them...
Dick, Phalaenopsis and Oncidium orchids should be no problem to any gardener. There are just a few things to read up on. This annual is not a real orchid. Real orchids cannot be grown from seed at home becasue they only germinate with the help of a mycorrhizal fungus.
Nothing poor about that it's very rich looking.
Thank you Rachel....I will look for seeds ...next year to grow and have those beautiful little flowers [I know you said they are tall]..
That's so beautiful Rachel.
Thanks Rachel, I have just looked up this "orchid" in the greenhouse expert. Is it too late to sow the seed now?
I have a host of new Schizanthus colours today. I have added a photo of a pretty white Schizanthus in my greenhouse album.
Dick, I think it might be a bit late for sowing this year.
