Filipendula

Filipendula rubra

Filipendula rubra

I have a bit of planting to do today but no compost so a trip out is called for.

My red Pulsatilla seeds are up so that is good news. I've brought them and the wallflower seedlings into the house for more careful minding.

I think the Wallflowers have suffered a bit from drying out or too much sun so I need to keep a better eye on them.

The Filipendula is looking particularly lovely at the minute. This perennial is already more than 5ft tall and doesn't seem to need staking. I only planted it last year!

I think I may get some more of that for my long border.

Lovely, absolutely lovely! I know this plant, relative of it grows wild in many of our regions (Filipendula ulmaria). I remember scent of it since I was a child.

Is this the time to sow Pulsatilla seeds? Must see if Mr Middleton has any, would love to try them.

That is a beautiful plant Rachel. I love it. Thats one for my wish list. Will try to find seed. Seedaholic have seeds for a white one but the pink is gorgeous so will keep looking. Filipendula are suited to clay soil so it would suit my garden perfectly.

It must be related to Meadowsweet as the Filipendula Olga mentions. I love it.

Alison, is it called 'Meadowsweet'? I didn't know, but very well named :) the scent is very strong and pleasantly turns the head :)

5 ft in a year, what height does it finish at do you know, really like that, it must look great in your open garden space, if you know what I mean.

A lovely plant Rachel mine is three years old and quite big and needed a little 'controlling' this year takes really easy from cuttings too. In later life have seen them being a bit of a thug but lifting and deviding might sort that out.

Rachel Rachel 16 July 2010 23:31:57

The plume is very like Astilbe but the size and general appearance of Filipendula is not. The leaves are lovely too.

I don't think it gets any taller, Fran, just spreads. Thanks for the info on cuttings, Bill. I will definitely try them.
