Messing with Seeds Again

27 February 2011 21:14:01

There was plenty of work done here today. Hubby did the first grass cut and, although he didn't get it all done, the place looks loads better now. He also pruned the apple and pear trees.

I pricked out and potted on the first of my little seedlings which are big enough for that - Strobilanthes. And I sowed a truck load of seeds, including five edibles (the last 5 on the list below). I made a mistake with the Okra - didn't soak it and sowed it in one pot when they dislike root disturbance. Oh well, we have plenty more seed.

I also went through and took action on seeds that have been slow to germinate - some went in the fridge and one, Wahlenbergia, had a lung full of smoke breathed into the plastic bag around it and the top sealed. Here's what I sowed...

Mina lobata
Atriplex hortensis var. purpurea
Felicia
Silene   Purple Prince
Dierama ambiguum
Acaena microphylla Scarlet Bidi-bidi
Stipa elegantissima
Stipa barbata Silver Feather
Mirabilis jalapa Variegata, Terra Nova Strain'
Hesperis matronalis
Clematis chiisanensis Korean Beauty
Teucrium hircanicum
Lychnis chalcedonica
Patrinia scabiosaefolia
Epilobium dodonaei
Verbena bonariensis
Verbascum   Snow Maiden
Isoplexis canariansis
Okra   Clemson Spineless
Tomatillo   Grande Rio Verde
Mizuna
Peppadew
Physalis peruviana

So who is moving out of the house THIS year?  :)

Wow, speechless! Best of luck.

Clara Clara 27 February 2011 21:23:36

The best of luck with that lot.

Thats an interesting list of seeds.  Did you soak the Mirabilis seeds Rachel, I had mine in my hand yesterday to sow them but thought it best to ask first.

Clematis Korean Beauty has germinated here :-)

Jacinta Jacinta 27 February 2011 21:30:35

My Mirabilis germinated about 2 weeks ago, Margaret. No soaking required.

Rachel Rachel 27 February 2011 21:39:21

It's mostly hardy perennials this year, Jacinta. I do hope they will be big enough to overwinter in the glasshouse this winter. So hopefully no one will have to move out : )

Rachel Rachel 27 February 2011 21:40:14

Thanks, Fran and Clare. I am sowing my perennials mostly in single pots as they take less space.

Rachel Rachel 27 February 2011 21:41:13

I didn't soak Mirabilis so I am glad to hear I don't need to, Jacinta : )

Rachel Rachel 27 February 2011 21:43:36

Great news about your Korean Beauty, Margaret. Did you put it on heat in the end? I think you told me 15-20C. I was reading how clematis can take years to germinate!!!

Hosta Hosta 27 February 2011 21:45:58

I put it on heat Rachel and it took about 3 weeks to appear.

Thanks for that Jacinta, will pop them in tomorrow

Rachel Rachel 27 February 2011 21:48:09

Thanks, Margaret.

Rachel, at last I have two strong seedlings in my Dodecatheon (sown August 2010) pot.   Thrilled about that! I got one seedling in my January 2011 sowing and then it keeled over.  Ever hopeful!!    Good luck with your seeds.  I have all sorts sown.  My two small trays of Cosmos are an inch high, my Morning Glory are up.  The Dahlia seeds that Deborah sent to me have germinated.

Hoeys Hoeys 28 February 2011 08:41:24

Rachel Rachel 01 March 2011 13:01:27

So pleased about your Dodecatheon, Sally. It sounds like you are doing great with the seeds.

I think I'll need some new borders, Liga. Otherwise I will at least be very popular with so many spare plants : )
